Hybrid Work Is Here To Stay. Now What? - Harvard Business Review

CURT NICKISCH: Welcome to the HBR IdeaCast from Harvard Business Review. I’m Curt Nickisch.

To say the last year has changed us would be an understatement. The pandemic forced many people to work and manage much more remotely and differently. Now, as a growing number of places return to more in-person work, it’s a good time to explore the issues that organizations and managers face as they reset and reorganize their working lives.

Throughout the next few months, HBR IdeaCast will look at these challenges and today we’re starting with implementing hybrid work across an organization. That’s a mix of remote work and onsite activity. Our guest today has studied remote work for nearly 20 years and he’s here to explain how leaders can think through hybrid work arrangements so that they’re fair to employees and effective for the organization, and not just short term.

Nicholas Bloom is a professor of economics at Stanford University and the author of the HBR article, “Don’t Let Employees Pick Their Work From Home days.” Nick, thanks so much for coming on the show.

NICHOLAS BLOOM: Curt, lovely to be here, thanks.

CURT NICKISCH: So I have a lot of nitty gritty questions for you about this, but just to get us going here, why is it important for managers and leaders to have a strategy in place when it comes to work from home and hybrid work? Why cant you just figure it out as you go along?

NICHOLAS BLOOM: Oh, that’s, in a sense the easy question. Firms and CEOs, in particular, CHRs, are under enormous pressure right now to tell their employees what they’re going to do in future, because these employees need to plan their lives around this. What most firms have decided is to go for hybrid. The typical plan will be something like three days in the office, two at home. So huge numbers of firms have announced this, Google, Microsoft, Apple, Citi Bank, HSBC, blah, blah, blah. Around 70 to 80% of firms are going to hybrid, the other 20 to 30% have mostly not decided.

So why is that? The reason is, hybrid represents a great trade-off between the benefits of being in-person, which is better innovation, typically better creativity, and the ability to build office culture, versus the benefits of not having to go into the office, which enables you to work quietly at home and avoid the painful commute. It looks like from the research firms are going to be about 5% more productive doing that. And employees on average are significantly happier.

CURT NICKISCH: Nick, in a recent HBR article, you argued that workers shouldn’t all get to choose what days they have off. Why is prescribing the days in and out of the office a good policy?

NICHOLAS BLOOM: Choices may be the most controversial and the most difficult issue, I think for managers I talk to right now. So the issue is, imagine you, as in the huge majority of firms have decided you’re going to do hybrid post pandemic. Now the question is how to execute the scheme and in particular, who gets to choose which days of the week they work from home. And also how many days do they get to work from home? So one extreme is full decentralization. Every employee gets to choose which days and how many days. So if you want to work from home four days a week and only come in on Wednesdays, you can, if you want to work from home zero days a week, you can. That’s one extreme. The middle position, I think, is team by team. So as a corporation, you say each team managers decides and he or she basically polls the people in their team, maybe polls other teams that they want to work closely with and makes the decision.

And then the final choice is fully centralized, which is the CEO, CHR, basically the people running the company, they decide, and they tell each team, you will work from home on these days. And importantly, you will not work from home on these other days. So for example, take Apple. Apple has announced you’re going to come in Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, work from home Wednesday, Friday. What that means is Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, you have all of your in-person meetings, big events, training sessions, leaving events, lunches, et cetera. It’s like three exhaustingly social days. And then Wednesday, Friday, you leave report writing, reading presentations, emails. And I have to say, in survey data I’ve seen, and from talking to companies, firms are pretty equally split between those three different positions.

CURT NICKISCH: And you recommend the harder prescription, right?

NICHOLAS BLOOM: My views have also changed to start off with, so the fully decentralized, the full choice version was what I was actually suggesting a year ago. And the justification for this is there is a huge variation in what employees want. If we look at survey data, around 20% of employees never want to work from home, they want to come in five days a week. They tend to be young singles or empty nesters. And they’re frankly fed up with working at home and they find it isolating. At the other extreme, 30% of people never want to come into work again. They tend to be middle-aged with kids and family, they live far away, or it’s expensive to commute. And then the remaining 50% want anything between one to four days a week. So given this huge variety, why not let people choose?

And in fact, one very senior manager I spoke to perfectly encapsulated this when she said, “Look for my team, I have great performance metrics and I’ve told them, I’m going to treat you adults. America is a free country. If you perform your job well, you can choose which days and how many days you come in and it’s up to you. Of course, if you don’t perform your job, I’m going to get serious with you and maybe haul you back into the office. But as long as you are performing, it’s entirely your choice.” That’s the defense for the full choice model. My view has changed because I see three problems with the full choice model.

CURT NICKISCH: Can I guess that one problem with this is that if it’s a complete mix of people every day with who’s in and who’s out, then some people start to think what’s the point of coming in if other people that I need to work with today are remote anyway, I might as well just stay home.

NICHOLAS BLOOM: Yes, exactly. So one issue is what I’d call the challenges of mixed mode.  Mixed mode is the name that’s being given when some are in the office and some are at home, turns out that really doesn’t work that well. So imagine trying to take Zoom or a Teams call with six people of which three are in the office, three are at home. You can imagine what happens. The three in the office will get in a conference room. They’re like three small heads in one screen. The other three are big heads on the other three screens. A, you can’t really see their expressions. And even worse, you can see there’s whispering –

CURT NICKISCH: Some companies try to solve this by making everybody join remotely, even when they’re at the office.

NICHOLAS BLOOM: Exactly. So that’s the next step along this evolution is, right –

CURT NICKISCH: So let’s make this equitable. We’re all talking to each other over a screen, even though we’re next to each other.

NICHOLAS BLOOM: Exactly. And so a lot of firms are going to set up these cubicles, I hear there’s soundproofing issues that people shout. They try their best. The problem with having people, join on their laptops in the office is A, as you said, why come in, in the first place, and B, more seriously, any controversial meeting, you know exactly what’s going to happen. If you’re one of the three from home, as soon as the meeting ends, the three folks in the office close their laptops, walk out of the cubicle and talk to each other, probably go grab a coffee.

So you cannot escape really this in-group out-group without some kind of Orwellian setup, some managers said, well, we’re just going to ban employees after meetings from talking about it. It’s like, can you imagine how you implement that? That’s like the secret police. Mixed mode is honestly really problematic and you can have better or worse mixed mode, but even the best execution runs into problems.

CURT NICKISCH: What other downsides are there to letting workers choose when to work from home?

NICHOLAS BLOOM: Imagine people were asked, if you get to work from home two days a week, which two days would you think they typically choose to work from home?

CURT NICKISCH: Monday and Friday, so they have long weekends.

NICHOLAS BLOOM: Yes, exactly. In the survey data, what we find is we asked, we’ve done this two waves, we’ve asked 10,000 people. So it’s pretty good data at this point, which days you would choose. And you find that only 18% percent of people choose Wednesday and 64% choose Friday. So if you reverse that around, you can see the problem. So if you think about how many people are going to come in, 82% of employees are going to come in on a Wednesday and you’re only going to have 36% come in Friday. What that means is if you have enough desks and office space to fully accommodate everyone on Wednesday, more than half of that is empty on the Friday and a Monday. So Wednesday is crammed, people are uncomfortable. There’s packed elevators, kitchens, doorways. Post COVID, people are very nervous about dense congestion. Monday, Friday in particular, it’s like tumbleweed blowing down the office.

CURT NICKISCH: You also wrote in your article about a diversity crisis, explain that.

NICHOLAS BLOOM: Yes. So the third point was something that, to be honest, came up looking at the data and talking to managers. So there are two facts you need to know. Fact one is who chooses to come into the office and how many days is not random. So for example, in our surveys, we found that if you look at college graduates, so that’s just over half the labor force folks with one plus year of college and you look at college grads with young kids, so kids under the age of 12, you see women are almost 50% more likely to want to work from home five days a week than men. It’s also the case, if you look at people who are disabled, who live far from the office, who are lower income, so can’t afford a car, these groups have a higher preference to work from home more days than other groups. And there’s nothing wrong with that, too, that’s completely as you’d expect, and it makes a lot of sense, but just to say that the choice if left open, it’s not going to be random.

Fact two, where this causes the problem is if you have teams where some people are working from home and others are coming in the office, those working from home face a very large promotion penalty. So to give you a number on that, I did a big randomized control trial on working from home in China, back in from 2010 to 2015. And what you found is people that work from home, their promotion rates were 50% of those that were coming in everyday. That is an enormous effect. And you can see why, they’re not around, they’re getting forgotten about, maybe they’re not developing managerial skills, et cetera. So if you put that together, you can see if you allow choice, you could easily find a situation five, 10 years from now whereby young single men are promoted up the firm, married people with young kids, particularly women, disabled people, people living further away don’t come in and they fall behind. And there’s both a diversity and a huge legal issue around them.

CURT NICKISCH: All right. So I’m a manager and I’ve decided to have a bit more structure when it comes to who works from home and when. How do I approach that decision? How do I decide that in an equitable way and communicate it and have it be an effective policy? What do you recommend?

NICHOLAS BLOOM: I think there are really two choices that I would advise. One is the team-based and one is the company-based and it depends what matters to firms. So you can say, look as a company, we would like some choice, but not complete choice. So we’re going to allow each team to decide it within the team, you’ve all got to come in on those days and all stay at home on the same days. And you may want to say, look, we advise teams to have three days in the office and two working from home. If you set it up at a team level, you immediately address the mixed mode problem for most meetings, because most meetings, at least if companies are set up on a team or a project basis or within team, within project, it’s not perfect, but you deal with most of it.

And you address most of the diversity concerns because promotions are normally considered against other folks in your team, that’s often the benchmark. You obviously don’t address the office use question. So at the team level you give more choice, but you’re going to have an inefficient use of office because most teams you’re going to discover are going to choose at least one of, if not both, Monday, Friday to work from home. The other version is just to centralize it. And coming back to the discussion earlier is say, we’re going to start off centralizing it. And we’re going to see how it plays out. Deciding upon hybrid now and announcing it’s a very good idea. And that’s what a huge number of companies have done, but announcing the full set of all the details and precisely how this will work is probably not best done now because it’s hard to predict and it’s going to change. And if you notice in the press, most companies have not announced the details precisely for those reasons.

CURT NICKISCH: There are also some people who have to come in more because of the nature of their work. When you have that variation, you are going to have differences and that can breed some issues of resentment and perceptions of unfairness. How do you deal with that?

NICHOLAS BLOOM: Multiple managers have said to me, roughly half or a third or two thirds of our employees can work from home, they’re very happy with this hybrid plan. The other one third or half, whatever it is, can’t and they’re feeling angry. They’ve said that they’ve had the whole pandemic having to come in everyday. Some of them have faced infection risk, been infected in fact, and now they’re not going to get this nice perk post-pandemic. First thing is a genuine issue. It is a real issue. That’s there’s no getting around it. And just to put numbers on it, in our survey, people report that working from home two days a week is equivalent to something like a 6% pay increase. They report it’s a pretty valuable thing to have.

And you can imagine why. So the types of solutions, one basic solution is obviously, and this has been discussed a fair bit, is having some make good pay bonus yearly for those that can’t work from home. Say, for example, you say for anyone that is not able to work from home, that’s coming in five days a week, we’re going to give you a 5% pay top up in reflection of the fact that you’re not getting this benefit. That’s mostly going to go to lower income individuals. If you look in the data, that’s slightly more likely to go to women, that’s slightly more likely to go to minorities, because they’re the kinds of roles we see in the data they hold, it tends to be slightly harder to have these working from home. So that’s definitely one policy that is on the table.

CURT NICKISCH:  I imagine that some companies are in a little bit of a pickle there too, because they’ve also hired people who were remote first. Now you may have to merge that or you have that same resentment from other people who say, “Well, now these people were hired and they get to stay remote and meanwhile, I have to come in three days a week.”

NICHOLAS BLOOM: What I’ve been hearing a lot from various companies is, particularly actually tack firms, during the pandemic, because they’ve hired so aggressively, they have now way more headcount that they can ever fit in their headquarters. They also, as you say, have a number of employees that have been hired and never been into the office. So I think the way this is going to shake out, there’re some guidelines on this. I personally would advise against having teams where some people are fully remote and others are coming in three days a week because of the promotion costs and the disruption. If you had a team of say six people and you hired a seventh person fully remote in the pandemic, I would probably make them come in.

And if they are extremely resistant to coming in, you face a devil’s dilemma of, do you basically move them, ask them to come in or quit. I’m not sure. I personally would not have a team, where one person is remote and feeling resentful, doesn’t get promoted for three, four years, because I just don’t think that’s a healthy situation. For teams where I would try and unify the team level and that may well mean some people quit and some turnover, I think that’s unavoidable. Then as you say, there are other teams where they’ve mostly been staffed up remote. And for those teams, companies may take the view, look, if I have a team of eight people and they’re all basically remote and they’ve been hard remote, sure it may be better to have had them all else equal hybrid come in three days a week, but most of them are going to quit rather than do that. And I’d probably rather the team working remotely at 90% efficiency, then two thirds of them quit and try and get the other one third in. So I think there’s going to be a lot of legacy effects.

CURT NICKISCH: It’s definitely an interesting business problem. Organizations have smade some short-term decisions to really see themselves through a crisis and then accelerate out of the crisis. And now you have this problem of trying to integrate that into a more sustainable way, but also not lose the advantages that you’ve clawed towards yourself, short term.

NICHOLAS BLOOM: Yes. And another thing just from watching this since the beginning of the pandemic is suddenly entering spring and particularly summer of 2021, the jobs market is completely heated up and now it’s the war for talent is back on. And that has turbocharged the remote work discussion because you see in the data what firms want is typically one to two days a week remote work on average, what employees want is typically two to three as in at least a day to a day and a half more. And employees are getting their way more and more because you’re desperate to hire. And this is meaning the number of days a week remote work is drifting up because it’s, often when I talk to companies that are saying, “Look, we wanted to have people work from home one day a week, we realized we’d never managed to hire or retain anyone. So we’ve moved to two or we wanted two, we’ve moved to three.” The pandemic is having an effect actually through the rapid recovery, forcing remote work, really as a perk in a way to retain employees.

CURT NICKISCH: Let’s talk about the timing of seeing this decision through. This will vary naturally a lot around the world and how the response to the pandemic has gone in different regions, in different countries. In the U.S. it seems like a lot of organizations are eyeing these returns after the Labor Day holiday, which is in early fall, typically when children go back to school. How do you think through the timing of making this change?

NICHOLAS BLOOM: One way to think about the timing is if you’ve ever been, as probably everyone has, in an airport and your plane has been delayed and it’s been delayed twice, you currently have a departure time. You think the plane may take off then, but you’re also thinking, well, it could be delayed again. Well, that’s what’s happening with the return to work. It’s been on the cards for some time. Currently, as of June, July 2021, it’s penciled in for most organizations for Labor Day, September. A lot of companies are getting a few employees back, a few companies like Goldman Sachs is the most obvious, they’re trying to get all their employees back. But I would say the stages of this for most companies, the best guess is you start to get 10, 20 people back from July, August onwards to test the systems out, blow the cobwebs off. From September, October, you start to get in large numbers of people probably ramping up pretty rapidly. And maybe by the end of this year, by Christmas 2021, you’re pretty much back to what you think is the long run, probably hybrid.

But this is a revolution in the future of work. A change that we’ve never seen before, and it’s going to take some time to play out. Revolutions are not quick. And so I think the whole throughout 2022, probably into 2023, there’s going to be endless turbulence. My advice for companies is the exact reverse of the Silicon Valley mantra of go fast and break things. I would be slow and cautious and boring on working from home, go for hybrid, maybe you decide that the team go for a three two plan, the very typical vanilla flavor decision, because sure, there are other things you can do, but it’s not clear they’ll work and I’d frankly wait for other firms to try it out and learn from their mistakes. So I think a lot of firms will do boring vanilla stuff throughout this year and it will become clearer what works and what doesn’t as we run into ‘22, ‘23.

CURT NICKISCH: Nick, you study management decisions as an economist. You’ve got these big sweeping views of how these very practical changes at the managerial level effect the economy. What’s your advice for a manager or leader anywhere in the world, really for how to go about keeping workers happy with remote options, but also making sure their business runs well. What’s a good mindset to approach this whole conundrum with?

NICHOLAS BLOOM: One other key piece of advice, I’ll call the Marissa Mayer story. So to set the scene, Marissa Mayer was the CEO of Yahoo from 2012 until I think maybe 2016, quite a few years, actually. And when she took over Yahoo, I know this because I spent about 45 minutes interviewing her what, six months ago. And it was fascinating. She said as she was putting in this performance management system, she discovered this whole group of people who worked from home full-time permanently. And when she started to look at what was going on, she pulled up their call logs and discovered a bunch of them had basically never logged in. It was like they hadn’t turned on their computer for over a week. And so she canceled it and it was in the media. She got, I think, quite unreasonably, a bunch of bad press, but the lesson she said she learned is very relevant to managers now.

And so she said, “Look, there’s two ways you can evaluate manager people. There’s what economists would call input based management. You can look at what they’re doing. Do they seem to be at their desk, working hard, furiously typing away, appearing to be productive, or you can use output based management, which is you manage based on what they do. Do they hit their sales targets, do they get their reports written, do they produce new products? Et cetera.” Now, if you’re running input based management, working from home is a nightmare because you can’t see what people are doing. Now, firms that are trying to do that have ended up trying to go for that spooky, horrible surveillance software, where you’re taking screenshots and using cameras to look at employees, faces, et cetera. It’s just awful.

Input based management is kind of okay, I’d never say it was actually particularly good, but it’s workable in the office. It is a disaster for working from home. Output based management, on the other hand is really from the get go has been best practice in the office. You want to reward people on what they achieve, but it turns out to be really the only workable way to run working from home. So what I’ve heard from a lot of managers is the pandemic has really accelerated their push to put in place, better performance management systems. So better data collection, better 360 reviews, more regular performance appraisals, better tracking and monitoring, et cetera, because that turns out to be absolutely essential if you want to have effective working from home.

CURT NICKISCH: Nick, this has been so great to hear about your research and thinking about this really big problem. Thanks for coming on the show to talk about it.

Before Covid, Blaze Bullock, 34, was on the road one week a month as a marketing consultant in the auto industry.

Then, when the country shut down, Bullock began working remotely. "Now they want me to start traveling again and visiting car dealerships," he said. "I don't want to do that at all."

Bullock said he likes working from home and spending more time with his friends and family in Salt Lake City. "I realized this is the only way I want to live."

The pandemic has caused a lot of people to reevaluate, particularly when it comes to work.

After working from home for over a year, Blaze Bullock says he'd like to freelance full-time or at least find a position that's entirely remote – and he's seen plenty of those types of openings.

After spending more than a year at home, some don't want to go back to commuting, preferring the flexibility of remote work at least a few days a week.

Others are simply burned out from logging long hours while also balancing child care and remote school, sometimes all at once.

And nearly all employees are ready to see what else is out there.

"Either they're unfulfilled from their jobs or their priorities have changed," said Maria Reitan, founder and head coach at Jump Team, based in Minneapolis.

In what's been dubbed the "Great Resignation," a whopping 95% of workers are now considering changing jobs, and 92% are even willing to switch industries to find the right position, according to a recent report by jobs site Monster.com. 

Most say burnout and lack of growth opportunities are what is driving the shift, Monster found. 

"When we were in the throes of the pandemic, so many people buckled down, now what we're seeing is a sign of confidence," said Scott Blumsack, senior vice president of research and insights at Monster.

Already, a record 4 million people quit their jobs in April alone, according to the Labor Department.

Candidates are putting their toe in the water to see what's out there.

At the same time, there are more opportunities for job seekers — with the Labor Department reporting a record 9.3 million job openings as of the latest tally.  

"The number of open jobs is higher than ever before, that's absolutely contributing to why candidates are putting their toe in the water to see what's out there," Blumsack said.

As Covid vaccinations gain steam, so are plans to return to the office, which is driving more workers to consider their options.

In a survey of more than 350 CEOs and human resources and finance leaders, 70% said they plan to have employees back in the office by the fall of this year — if not sooner — according to a report by staffing firm LaSalle Network.

Of the companies that are planning for office reentry, managing employees who want to continue working remotely is a top concern, LaSalle Network found.    

"If we see a wave of employees leaving, companies are going to have to figure it out," Reitan said.

Now, 9 out of 10 organizations will be combining remote and on-site working, according to a separate McKinsey survey. Most companies, however, said they've haven't hammered out the specifics of what that will look like.

Uber on Tuesday told employees it will roll out a hybrid return-to-work model this fall, allowing for a more flexible approach to location and time spent in the office.

The company is asking employees to be in the office 50% of the time. That time can be split up in whatever way works best for employees and their teams, Uber's chief people officer, Nikki Krishnamurthy, wrote in a blog post. That could mean one week on, one week off, or three days one week and two days the next week, for instance. It's a slightly different model than many companies have been choosing, where they ask employees to come in a set number of days each week.

Uber employees will also have more flexibility on their preferred office location, the company said. They'll be able to choose from a list of "dedicated team hubs," instead of being limited to their pre-pandemic location.

The new model will likely start this fall. Employees are allowed to continue to work from home until Sept. 13, barring a worsening of Covid-19.

"Before then, our team will be able to apply for remote work or potential office changes. It's our goal to have all remote work/location transfers processed by September," a spokesperson told CNBC.

Uber is also telling employees they can apply to become fully remote.

"We'll also host periodic in-person meetings once our offices reopen so remote employees have the chance to meet and collaborate with their teammates face to face and benefit from in-person interaction and collaboration," Krishnamurthy said.

After more than a year of office closures, employers are increasingly asking people to come back to the office in some capacity now that vaccines are rolling out and Covid restrictions lift.

Spotify adapted a "work from anywhere" model, which allows employees to choose whether they want to be in the office full time, be at home full time or a combination of the two. Salesforce said it would let employees choose whether they want to come into the office again, saying "the 9-to-5 workday is dead." Meanwhile, Twitter and Square are letting employees work from home "forever."

In regard to Covid restrictions, the spokesperson said Uber is following Cal/OSHA Emergency Temporary Standards. Employees who attest to being fully vaccinated no longer need to wear a mask or social distance as they return, and the company is encouraging employees to get vaccinated.

Briefs: Marion offices closed Monday for holiday - Marion Star

City offices to close Monday for Independence Day holiday

MARION - As a result of the Independence Day holiday falling on Sunday, the federal observation of the holiday will occur Monday. Therefore, all offices in City Hall will be closed Monday. Sanitation crews will not collect refuse, recycling or yard waste. Residents who normally have sanitation service on Monday are asked to have their collections at curbside no later than 7 a.m. Tuesday. Both Monday and Tuesday collections will take place Tuesday with the possibility that some of Tuesday’s collection could extend into Wednesday.

Transit buses for Marion Area Transit will not be in operation on Monday.

Ohio EMS calls on Ohioans to donate blood due to critical shortage

COLUMBUS – The State Board of Emergency Medical, Fire, and Transportation Services is calling on Ohioans to consider donating blood due to a critical blood shortage in Ohio and nationwide. The current shortage has been exacerbated by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, decreased blood donations, and an increased usage of blood and blood products to treat an increasing number of trauma cases. 

The American Red Cross says donors of all blood types — especially type O — are needed to prevent further delays to patient care.

There are several upcoming blood drives in Marion County. The Marion Nazarene Church, 233 W. Church St., will host a drive from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. Friday. Another drive will take place 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. Saturday and again from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. July 13 at The Alber Red Cross Center, 1849 Summerset Drive. VFW Post 3313, 961 N. Main St., will host a blood drive from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. on July 8.

Schedule an appointment to give blood by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org, calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or enabling the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device.

Those who come to give through July 6 will receive a Red Cross embroidered hat by mail, while supplies last. And, donors who come to give July 7-31 will receive a $10 Amazon.com Gift Card by email, plus a chance to win gas for a year — a $5,000 value.

Here are ways to keep your family safe while enjoying the holiday.

Driving safety tips

1. Plan ahead. Before heading out, make sure any needed vehicle repairs have been made and check the air pressure in the tires, along with fluids and brakes. Have a first-aid kit and any other emergency supplies ready.

2. Obey the posted speed limit. When you exceed the speed limit, you reduce the amount of available time needed to avoid a traffic crash.

3. Do not drive impaired. Designate a sober driver, or call a taxi, ride-sharing service, friend or family member to help you get home safely.

4. Buckle up. Make sure everyone in the vehicle wears a seat belt and that children are properly restrained in the appropriate child safety seats.

Fireworks and burgers, not fires

With so many fireworks displays around metro Atlanta, police and firefighters advise letting the professionals handle the patriotic displays.

Every year, an estimated 11,000 people were treated for injuries due to fireworks in U.S. emergency rooms, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Around the Fourth of July, about 200 people are injured each day by fireworks. Sparklers, or hand-held fireworks, are responsible for about 25 percent of the injuries, the commission reported.

Additionally, The National Fire Protection Association reports that more than 16,000 reported fires are started by fireworks annually.

For those who insist on using their own fireworks, do so with caution, experts say.

And for those grilling up burgers and hotdogs, remember never to leave a grill unattended, Ramirez said. Grilling causes approximately 10,000 home fires a year, according to the Red Cross.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about one in five people who die from drowning are children 14 and younger. And for every child who dies from drowning, another five receive emergency treatment for water-related incidents.

Drowning is generally quiet, and victims are rarely able to call for help, the CDC says. Plus, drowning can occur in less than a minute.

Swimming safety tips:

1. Provide close and constant attention to children in or near water

2. Use the buddy system. Even experienced swimmers should not swim alone.

3. Children, inexperienced swimmers and boaters should wear life-jackets

4. Swim in an area with a lifeguard when possible.

5. Don’t dive. Enter the water feet first.

Beat the heat

High temperatures in metro Atlanta often reach the 90s this time of year, according to the Channel 2 Action News weather team. Scattered storms may offer some relief, but the heat can be unhealthy for those outside long periods of time.

Signs of heat stroke include hot, red skin which may be dry or moist, changes in consciousness, vomiting and high body temperature, according to the Red Cross. Call 9-1-1 immediately if someone shows signs of heat stroke. And try to cool the person down, such as with wet towels or ice.

We all love to celebrate the Fourth of July with family, friends, food and fireworks, but all too often the festivities turn tragic on our nation’s roads. This American holiday also brings increased consumption of alcohol and drugs, which lead to impaired driving and deadly consequences.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, nationally, during the 2019 July Fourth holiday period (the most recent statistics available), 515 people died in motor vehicle crashes, and 198 of these fatalities occurred in an alcohol-impaired crash.

During the 2019 July Fourth holiday period, 69% of those who died in alcohol-related crashes were in vehicles involving a driver with a Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) almost two times higher than the legal limit of .03.

Over the holiday in 2019, five people lost their lives in Iowa, and three of these were due to alcohol-related crashes.

Law enforcement agencies across Iowa will be participating in the national Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign from July 2 to July 5, 2021. In an effort to combat impaired driving, officers will be exhibiting zero tolerance for impaired drivers.

Impaired driving is not only dangerous but illegal, and it puts everyone on the road in jeopardy. There is also a financial cost to driving impaired. An OWI arrest can cost up to $10,000. You could lose your license, your car and your job.

Before you set out to celebrate this holiday weekend, make a plan: have a designated driver, or call a rideshare service.

The Iowa Department of Public Safety and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau reminds you that it is never okay to drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Remember: If you feel different, you drive different.

INDIANAPOLIS (WANE) Indiana Conservation Officers will once again be participating in a national campaign to crackdown on boating-under-the-influence laws as part of Operation Dry Water.

Operation Dry Water, a year-round program, will be in heightened effect July 2–4.

Indiana Conservation Officers, in partnership with the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators and the U.S. Coast Guard, will focus on educating boaters about safe boating practices, including keeping alcohol off the boat, for both operators and passengers.

Officers will be on the lookout for impaired boaters. Boaters will notice an overall increase in patrols, both on the water and at recreational boating checkpoints, to remove dangerous and impaired boaters from the waterways.

“Each year we are faced with incidents and tragedies that could have been avoided if it weren’t for the presence of drugs or alcohol,” says Indiana Boating Law Administrator Lt. Kenton Turner. “As a part of the community ourselves, we want to ensure that recreational boaters, paddlers, and anyone else enjoying our waterways have a safe place to spend their time.

“That is why Indiana Conservation Officers are joining hundreds of agencies nationwide to do our part in keeping boaters safe and preventing incidents and fatalities related to boating under the influence.”

Operating a vessel under the influence of drugs or alcohol is illegal on all bodies of water and can lead to serious injuries, death, and legal consequences. In Indiana, it is illegal to operate a vessel with a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.08% or higher. Indiana Conservation Officers remind boaters to always boat sober and to wear a life jacket when on or around the water.

What Technology Best Facilitates Remote and Hybrid Work? - SHRM

​The question isn't whether offices are adopting hybrid practices—it's which hybrid practices they're using.

Some, like Google, are firmly in the office camp. They have set a return-to-office deadline of Sept. 1, 2021. Anyone wishing to work remotely for more than 14 days per year needs management approval.

Others, like Ford and JP Morgan Chase, favor flexibility and rotational work models between remote and in-office work.

Many companies are figuring it out on the fly as they start to bring employees back to the workplace.

"We face the biggest shift in work in over a century, and companies don't feel prepared," said Tommy Weir, founder and CEO of enaible. "To set a company up for success and to better understand the technologies that aid productivity at home or in the office, and others that don't, leaders need to turn to data."

He believes artificial intelligence will be the key to understanding employee productivity and which technologies and applications improve performance and empower workers to achieve more without burning out.

Analyzing Productivity

The Aternity Global Remote Work Productivity Tracker report compares three distinct scenarios from the standpoint of productivity and technology enablement: work at home, office work and the hybrid workplace.

The study makes use of a User Experience Index (UXI), a measure of the performance of various applications. This incorporates wait time, page load time, crashes, hangs, errors and other metrics. It is measured on a scale from 0 to 5, with 5 being the highest.

The report finds that software-as-a-service (SaaS) applications tend to perform well, and in some cases better, in remote environments than onsite. But results vary depending on the type of work being done, work patterns and the applications in use.

Researchers analyzed an administrator who used Microsoft applications including Outlook, Teams, SharePoint and Excel, as well as SAP and other applications, and spent three days per week (Monday, Tuesday and Friday) in the office and two days at home. Outlook, Teams and Excel (all SaaS) performed better when the employee was remote compared to performance in the office. Workday is another app that seems to suit remote work, though performance was only marginally better than onsite. Web browsing, too, turned out to be much better at home using a VPN than in the office. However, SharePoint performance was largely the same for either location.

Heavy-duty enterprise applications for enterprise resource planning (ERP), financials and accounting, not surprisingly, don't seem to travel as well. The study finds that employee productivity suffers in a remote setting when SAP is in use. Why? It's such a bandwidth-hogging behemoth that interfaces with so many enterprise systems that its performance suffers outside of the office. The report notes that 20 minutes per week gets eaten up, on average, waiting for SAP to respond. Multiply that by a large workforce using the tool, and a lot of productivity is being drained away.

A possible workaround for such applications is deploying virtual desktop sessions for SAP and other ERP-type software. That could help to eliminate much of the latency challenges that remote workers face.

But some applications just work better when confined to the office.

"Employees who consistently use client-heavy applications could benefit from time in the office, while those who only leverage SaaS applications can have flexibility and can work wherever they want without a noticeable change in application performance," said Jon Hodgson, vice president of product at Aternity.

In another scenario from the Aternity report, a customer service team member spends Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in the office and the rest of the week at home. This individual uses Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Power BI and, predominantly, Teams.

"On the days they work remotely, they vary their schedule to fit their needs, working less intensely throughout the day and more intensely into the late evening," Hodgson said. "This employee could likely work exclusively from home while maintaining similar productivity levels."

SharePoint performance, though, was noticeably down at home compared to the office. Power BI scores were slightly better in the office than at home.

Finance Can Suffer Remotely

Finally, researchers studied a week's application usage for an office-based finance team member who uses a lot of SaaS applications, and a planning and dispatch expert working only at home. As the finance person uses SAP, the person would need to be in the office during SAP-intensive days.

The planner, too, suffers a little at home due to the use of SAP and SharePoint, which both had poor home scores. Everything else performed well. This employee would probably be better in the office. But a hybrid arrangement could work if home Internet access was upgraded.

"When an employee uses a consistent set of applications throughout each day, and those applications perform the same remotely as onsite, they should have more flexibility," Hodgson said. "Hybrid-work policies need to be tailored to specific departments and individuals. In addition to taking into account the nature of an employee's work and their personal situations, employers need to understand the types of work environments where their employees can be most productive and how they can deliver the best employee experiences."

Maine community colleges train rural students for remote work - Inside Higher Ed

The Maine Community College System will launch a free training program to prepare over 700 rural students for remote jobs over the next three years.

Students living in rural areas of the state will be able to take six- to nine-month-long online courses in fields especially conducive to remote work, such as IT support, customer service and medical transcription. Participants will receive training and earn a certificate in remote work skills. The program will also offer a certificate course for supervisors on how to manage remote workers.

Administrators plan to start the Remote Work for ME program next January with a cohort of about 60 rural students. The $1.2 million program will be funded by a $535,000 seed grant from Ascendium Education Group, a philanthropic organization focused on postsecondary education, as well as funds from the John T. Gorman Foundation, the community college system and its foundation.

“Over the years Maine has tried a variety of ways to bring jobs to rural communities,” John Fitzsimmons, president of the Foundation for Maine’s Community Colleges, said in a press release. “Through the advancement of technology, along with the support of employers, we can now connect urban-based companies with skilled workers working remotely. This is a win-win for both Maine employers and rural workers.”

The initiative is an outgrowth of the pandemic and the ways it appears to be reshaping the norms of American work culture. Employees across the country left their offices in droves in spring 2020 because of COVID-19. More than a year later, some workers may never go back to spending full weeks in the office. The percentage of workers permanently working from home is expected to double in 2021, according to a survey by the market research firm Enterprise Technology Research.

Dan Belyea, chief workforce development officer at the Maine Community College System, called this shift a “cultural transformation.” He said that many employees were “thrown into” working remotely during the pandemic without any preparation for the unique challenges of working partly or entirely from home, but going forward, students can be methodically taught how to thrive in a remote work environment.

“We want to train folks not only to do a job that’s in the range of remote work, but we want to train students in how to be highly successful and efficient,” he said. “That’s going to take a new set of skills. How do you work with folks that you may not necessarily see every day? How do you communicate? How do you project manage your work? How do you keep yourself motivated?”

Four of the colleges in the Maine Community College System are in rural areas, and all seven of them serve rural students, Belyea said.

The trend toward remote work could have particular advantages for rural communities experiencing population loss due to outmigration. Populations in many rural areas have been thinning for decades as college graduates leave in search of higher-paying jobs in cities.

Many of these students don’t actually want to leave, said Kai A. Schafft, director of the Center on Rural Education and Communities at Penn State University.

“The highest-achieving students from rural areas are also often those young people who are most connected with their communities,” he said. “I think in many cases, kids from rural areas would be happy to stay in the places that they’re from, or go somewhere else and return to those places, but there has to be some kind of economic opportunity as well.”

Remote work may be a way for alumni to use the credentials they earned in college and remain in the rural areas where they grew up, said Mara Tieken, associate professor of education at Bates College.

“One of the challenges with rural college-going is it exacts a higher cost on rural kids and rural families, because oftentimes going to college may mean getting a degree that can be really hard to put to use in your rural place,” she said.

She noted that universities too often have an “urban-centric bias” and steer students toward leaving rural areas. For example, many four-year institutions build their alumni networks, offer internships and advertise jobs predominantly in cities.

“Really meaningfully addressing that will take some deliberate work across colleges, really thinking about how are we urban-centric in our networking? How can we shift that?” Tieken said. “With remote work, that might be easier.”

Higher education leaders and lawmakers have put a particular emphasis on supports for rural students in the last few years. For example, the University of North Carolina system set a goal in January 2017 to enroll 11 percent more students from rural and low-income counties and to increase these students’ degree attainment by 20 percent in the system's strategic plan through 2022. Senator Susan Collins, the Maine Republican, and Senator Maggie Hassan, a New Hampshire Democrat, introduced a bipartisan bill in the U.S. Senate last year to create a demonstration program intended to encourage rural students to pursue higher education, graduate and enter the workforce.

A new research alliance was formed in January to study rural regional colleges. Achieving the Dream, a nonprofit organization focused on community college student success, in February announced a new initiative, called Building Resiliency in Rural Communities for the Future of Work, to help rural colleges provide students with work skills and connect students to well-paying jobs.

There are over 260 rural community colleges in the United States, which educate nearly 670,000 students a year, according to the U.S. Department of Education. Meanwhile, nearly 41 million American adults live at least 25 miles from the nearest college or university or in places where one community college is the only source of broad-access public higher education in that area, according to the Urban Institute. Rural community colleges suffer from disparities in local, state and federal funding, access to broadband internet, and student basic needs and mental health resources, according to a 2021 report from the Association of Community College Trustees.

Tieken pointed to spotty broadband access in rural areas as a possible obstacle for students as industries move toward remote work. Only two-thirds of rural Americans report having broadband access at home, according to a 2019 Pew Research Center study.

Belyea said he expects students to face these kinds of challenges, but the Remote Work for ME program will provide students with laptops and Wi-Fi hotspots as needed, free of charge, and students can keep the equipment after the program.

“As we did for our students during the pandemic, we’re going to make sure that’s not a barrier for them,” he said.

Other community college leaders are also considering new ways to give rural students access to remote work opportunities.

For example, Cloud County Community College in Kansas is now providing a coding certificate program in partnership with Rural & Remote, which trains remote workers in rural areas. The 50-hour, noncredit program will introduce students to HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Command Line and other programming languages. This is the first time the college has offered a curriculum in coding and web design.

“This opportunity aligns with the college’s mission to prepare students to lead successful lives and enhance the vitality of our communities,” Amber Knoettgen, president of Cloud County Community College, said in a press release.

Maria Dahlquist, Rural & Remote tech lead for northwest Kansas, said in the release that the partnership is focused on reaching students who want to pursue a career where they can live anywhere -- such as rural Kansas. The curriculum is designed for students of all experience levels, "even if you’ve never written code in your life."

Charles Terrell, the outgoing president of Eastern West Virginia Community and Technical College, said institution leaders have been exploring the idea of creating a hub for telecommuters in technology fields on campus.

In 2018, the college began renting space on campus to the Washington, D.C.-based technology firm ISMS Solutions, and in return, the company recruits students that work in the on-campus site. Terrell believes this can be a broader model where employers set up outposts on campus that offer jobs to students and graduates in the area. That way, students can telecommute to companies based elsewhere while working in a social, nonisolating environment with secure internet access. Simultaneously, the college can design training programs that meet these companies’ needs, he said.

He described his vision as a “cross-pollination between education and employers,” a community college “plus almost a technology park.”

“This becomes a recruitment pipeline for students to be able to work for an employer on-site, like ISMS, and know that they’re doing this at home in their community and not having to go and find jobs in Northern Virginia or D.C. or along the Beltway,” he said. For students in counties near the college with poor internet access, the campus may have better internet access than they have at home. “The college not only becomes a source for education but the site where they may be employed by another employer.”

Belyea, of the Maine Community College System, said he envisions the Remote Work for ME program as a model that can be replicated at other colleges that serve rural students and aim to help them succeed in a shifting work landscape.

“We’ve attempted to lower every barrier we can imagine to allow someone to access this program, access the equipment needed to be involved in this training and the ability to bridge the skills gap that they may have and provide a real wage for themselves and their families,” he said.

SEOUL, June 29 (Reuters) - South Korea's large manufacturing employers have received permission from the country's health authorities to administer COVID-19 vaccines at in-house clinics, hoping to speed up inoculation of their employees.

Affiliates of the country's biggest conglomerate Samsung Group, including Samsung Electronics Co Ltd (005930.KS), Samsung Display and Samsung SDI Co Ltd (005930.KS), plan to offer vaccine doses to employees at work next month, the companies said on Tuesday.

Samsung affiliates plan to offer Moderna Inc (MRNA.O) COVID-19 vaccines for its office and production workers, as well as workers from suppliers in South Korea who sign up for doses.

Other large companies registered to provide doses include chipmaker SK Hynix Inc (000660.KS) and panel maker LG Display Co Ltd (034220.KS), according to the companies. Under the plans only companies' own staff and stationed workers from suppliers are eligible for the vaccinations.

South Korea reported 595 new infections in the 24 hours up to midnight on Monday, bringing its tally to 156,167 cases, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency said, with a death toll of 2,017.

June 28 (Reuters) - Uber Technologies Inc (UBER.N) will let employees work half their hours from wherever they want as part of its revamped return-to-office strategy, the transport app company plans to announce on Tuesday, according to a person familiar with the matter.

In one of the most flexible policies offered yet by a big U.S. tech company as the COVID-19 pandemic eases, Uber plans to say that those working in offices need to spend at least 50% of their time there.

But unlike many other companies the policy does not mean at least three days per week in the office, the source said. Instead, workers can show up five days one week and zero the next.

The plan is a reversal from April when Uber said that from September "employees can work from home up to two days a week, but with a clear expectation that they also come into the office three days a week."

When working remotely, employees can be wherever, including at home, with family or even more exotic destinations. They will be encouraged to try working away from their regular home for four weeks a year, the source said.

The company on Tuesday also is expected to say it will begin allowing more employees to work remotely all the time.

Online news outlet Insider first reported details of the plan on Monday.

(NEW YORK) — The July 4th weekend is expected to be the busiest travel period since the start of the pandemic, with more Americans taking to the roads and skies.

AAA forecasts 43 million Americans will hit the roads over the holiday — 5% more than the volume the organization saw in 2019.

“What’s interesting is compared to 2019 travel, volume by car is actually up,” Jeanette McGee, director of AAA’s external communications, told ABC News. “It just proves that the road trip is back stronger than ever.”

McGee said major metropolitan areas like Atlanta, Boston and San Francisco will see traffic three to five times higher than a typical day. McGee said drivers should avoid traveling at peak times.

“If you’re headed out for the holiday weekend, you’re going to want to avoid traveling between 3 and 6 p.m. on Thursday and Friday,” McGee said. “You’re going to have commuters mixing with people getting out of town. So, the best day to travel is going to be Sunday, and if you’re returning on Monday, definitely do so earlier in the day.”

Before hitting the road, be prepared for high prices at the gas pump — according to AAA, prices will be the highest since the same period in 2014.

“Gas prices are expensive, and they are not letting up,” McGee said. “The national average is $3.09 and we expect it to increase ahead of the holiday weekend.”

Rental car prices are also expected to be high, with the global microchip shortage still affecting vehicle supply.

“Rental cars are definitely expensive this summer, and it’s really important that if you’re planning a trip that you reserve early,” McGee said.

According to Hopper, an online travel booking tool, rental car prices are up 100% relative to where they were at the beginning of the year.

“They were about $50 in January and they’re about $110 each day, currently,” Hopper economist Adit Damodarn told ABC News. “We thought that those prices would start to slow down, but the catalyst for kind of bringing those prices back down would be increasing the supply of rental cars.”

While air travel is not expected to exceed 2019 numbers, experts said airlines will carry the most passengers since the start of the pandemic.

Domestic destinations like Las Vegas, Miami and Orlando, Florida are the most popular, according to Hopper. The Caribbean and Mexico are the most popular international destinations, according to Damodarn.

“July 4 is the most searched weekend of summer 2021 thus far,” Damodarn said. “It’s going to be the busiest travel weekend since the start of the pandemic.”

American Airlines expects to operate nearly 5,500 daily flights from Thursday to Monday, with the busiest travel days being Thursday and Friday, a spokesperson said.

United Airlines expects to fly two million customers from Thursday to Tuesday, with Thursday and Monday anticipated to be its busiest days.

FLORIDA — This year, statewide sales tax holidays in the Sunshine State are for more than such essentials as school supplies and hurricane preparedness items.

As the state reopens, residents are being encouraged in various ways to help kick Florida’s economy back into high gear. The state legislature has created Freedom Week as part of that encouragement, and also as a way to help give a leg up to its arts, live entertainment, culture, sports and hobby industries — some of the hardest hit during the COVID-19 pandemic.


What You Need To Know


From Thursday, July one through Wednesday, July 7, residents can purchase a wide variety of event tickets, admissions and entry fees, as well as a slew of equipment and peripherals for outdoor activities like fishing, boating and camping, without having to pay sales tax. 

The following items fall under Freedom Week guidelines (and no, Fourth fans, fireworks are not eligible):

Admissions

  • Live music events (through Dec. 31, including season tickets)
  • Live sporting events (through Dec. 31)
  • Movies (through Dec. 31)
  • Museum entry (including annual passes)
  • State park entry (including annual passes)
  • Ballets, plays and musical theater performances (through Dec. 31, including season tickets)
  • Fairs, festivals and cultural events (through Dec. 31)
  • “Private and membership clubs providing physical fitness facilities” (through Dec. 31)

General outdoor supplies

  • Sunscreen and insect repellant (up to $15)
  • Water bottles (up to $30)
  • Hydration packs and bicycle helmets (up to $50)
  • Sunglasses (up to $100)
  • Binoculars (up to $200)
  • Outdoor gas or charcoal grills and bicycles (up to $250)

Fishing supplies

  • Bait and tackle (up to $5 for individual items, $10 for sets)
  • Tackle boxes or bags (up to $30)
  • Rods and reels (up to $75 if sold individually, $150 for combos)

Boating and water activity supplies

  • Snorkels, goggles and swimming masks (up to $25)
  • Boating flares (up to $50)
  • Life jackets, coolers, paddles and oars (up to $75)
  • Water skis, wakeboards, kneeboards and “recreational inflatable water tubes or floats capable of being towed” (up to $150)
  • Paddleboats and surfboards (up to $300)
  • Canoes and kayaks (up to $500)

Camping supplies

  • Lanterns and flashlights (up to $30)
  • Sleeping bags, portable hammocks, camp stoves, collapsible camping chairs (up to $50)
  • Tents (up to $200)

Other sports equipment

  • “Any item used in individual or team sports, not including clothing or footwear” (up to $40)

It’s a lot of stuff, for sure. And, as always, this tax holiday comes with its own caveats:

  • We’ll say it again — no fireworks
  • No rain checks
  • You can’t get a full break on BOGO items whose cumulative price is higher than the spending cap
  • Sales in a theme park, entertainment complex, public lodging establishment or airport do not qualify
  • No pool toys
  • No commercial fishing supplies

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WDVM) — If you’re planning to travel this holiday weekend, you’ll be joined by over a million Marylanders. AAA Mid-Atlantic predicts this Fourth of July will break all previous travel records since 2001.

While Maryland can expect to see almost triple the number of air travelers seen last year (a 166% increase), the vast majority of people will be hitting the roads — almost 93%. AAA, which expects to around 46,000 stranded people across the nation, had some advice for everyone who will be dusting off their car for its first road trip in a while.

“Get your car checked out. Batteries, engine, and tires are the general reasons why we have people getting stranded. We’re looking at about 8,500 Marylanders getting stranded over the holiday weekend,” said Jeanette Tejeda de Gomez, senior specialist of public and government affairs.

AAA recommends being aware of all COVID-19 regulations in areas you plan to travel to before you get going, to avoid any potential snags in your vacation. The company has also put together a chart of the best and worst times to start traveling:

Fireworks sales ‘booming’ prior to 4th of July holiday - WFLA

TAMPA (WFLA) – A manager at a local fireworks retailer tells 8 On Your Side, business prior to the 4th of July holiday is booming! Jay Jones is with Patriotic Fireworks on U.S. 19 in Holiday.

“Sales have been real good,” said Jones. “A lot more people coming out and buying fireworks.”

Jay Jones is a manager at Patriotic Fireworks in Holiday.

Some customers may be buying their items early this year after hearing of a possible firework shortage. Jones shelves are full and he says he’s not worried.

“The guys that own this company, they have been doing it for 40-years. It’s a family-run business and they pay close attention to what goes on in the market and they were prepared for this. They seen it coming,” said Jones. “So we are stocked up real well and our plan is to not run out. “

Jones says worries about a firework shortage and the fact that setting off fireworks in Florida is now legal on July 4th and New Years Eve and New Years Day, may be driving demand.

One of the hot items this year is what’s called the TIKI bomb. It sends explosives high in the sky and looks almost like a professional show. “It is very close to what they do in professional shows,” said Jones. “Some of the breaks are as big as what you see in a professional show. “

The TIKI bomb retails for just under $200, but that didn’t stop Jeremy Howard from picking one up, among other things.

“I came here a couple of years ago and saw all of the stuff they had and I started grabbing new stuff, trying new stuff and now a couple of years later this is what it looks like,” said Howard. “I get really excited. “
