The Lee County Sheriff's office is warning drivers to make sure they're obeying posted speed limits when they hit the road this weekend.
Sheriff Stacy Weber said his department is hoping for a calm Fourth of July, but said he knows things could get a little crazy.
"Just a few minutes ago I stopped someone was driving through here from Florida so you never know what your going to run into who you're going to run into," he said.
Weber said drivers will be seeing more deputies out on the roads.
"On any given night this weekend you can expect to see two to six officers," he said.
This comes after a period where deputies have been seeing dangerously high speeds.
Just under two months ago deputies clocked a car going 113 miles per hour on Highway 61 by the Fort Madison overpass.
Weber said they have seen things slow down since then.
"Through enforcement we've been seeing that's been getting lesser and lesser," he said.
But deputies said they're still seeing those who've got the need for speed.
"The other deputy I work with today, he got someone going 96 and that was in a 65 mile an hour zone," deputy Wade Johnson said.
Weber said drivers like that will face stiff consequences.
"You'll get your drivers license revoked, 20 mph and over," he said.
Weber said speeders going less than that but still over the limit should also be prepared to pay.
"It's going to be between $100 and $300," he said.
But deputies said collecting fines isn't their main goal.
"We're here to helping motorists, making sure that we're being seen, maybe help deter people from speeding and slow it down," Johnson said. "Drive safely so that way everyone can get where they need to be."
Weber said people should also make sure to buckle their seatbelt any time they get into a car.
