Letter: A holiday that glorifies war and cloth - Chico Enterprise-Record

I watched the fireworks in Washington, DC and included were shots of U.S. warships out to sea shooting off cannons and images of soldiers feeding cannons with shells. I had the realization that what we glorify on the 4th is war and a piece of red, white and blue cloth. It’s supposed to represent this country’s freedom for all Americans.

Too bad it doesn’t because as long as there are blacks who are killed just because they have dark skin; as long as Native Americans aren’t respected and their land protected from the likes of Trump and his thugs who arrested them on Friday for trying to keep his hate machine of fireworks and bombastic phony patriotism out; then we have no right to celebrate.

I have a Republican friend I saw today and she was shocked to hear I don’t revere the flag and called me unpatriotic. I love her but she makes no secret about her prejudice against blacks.  I told her love of a flag should never supercede the love of a human. Like all Republicans,  she doesn’t get it. Our fledgling country wanted freedom from English rule, yet they in turn engaged in slavery. This ignorance and lack of insight has been passed down till today via Republicans who want to continue memorializing slave owners. They don’t get it. Vote them out!
