On July 16, the Bay Area News Group held a virtual newsroom webinar about TV in the coronavirus era, during which entertainment editor Randy McMullen and I took questions from the audience about the medium’s plans for fall and beyond.
Over the next few days and weeks, I hope to share some of the questions and topics that we covered in the webinar, starting with this one:
Q: Given the production shutdowns brought on by the pandemic, how will the Hallmark Channel’s annual barrage of holiday movies be impacted?
A: This one stumped us, so we had to do a little research. It turns out that the Hallmark Channel just this week announced plans for 40 brand-new holiday films, which will start airing in the fall.
Considering all the trials and tribulations that 2020 has delivered, it’s a good bet that many of us will be turning to these sentimental, feel-good flicks to make our spirits bright.
Hallmark and Lifetime typically shoot their holiday films during the summer, mostly in Canada, where production just resumed after a four-month shutdown. The Hollywood Reporter recently published a story about how the Christmas movies are being shot with scaled-back sets and social distancing.
And one other note of interest: American actors appearing in these films are required to endure a 14-day quarantine upon crossing the border. So that adds an extra obstacle to the process. You can read the THR story right here.
Meanwhile, the Hallmark Channel is airing a “Christmas in July Movie Countdown” this weekend — beginning tonight.
