The Pataskala Community pool saw 175 total reservations for its opening weekend – a holiday weekend – according to Parks Manager Lenier Crawford.

Crawford told Pataskala Council July 7 that on opening day Friday, July 3, there were 70 participants across the two daily sessions. Overall, morning sessions, he said, saw heavier turnout.

As earlier reported, a “major” COVID cleaning is conducted between the two daily sessions, with other cleanings processes occurring every two hours.

“We were hoping to see more, but overall, it was a success,” Crawford said. He said it was too soon to tell if the pool would be profitable this season, but expects some data to assess around early August.

Weather over the weekend was very hot, and temperatures approaching or exceeding 100 degrees were expected through much of the week of July 6.

It was also noted efforts continue to offset water loss not just to simple evaporation, but also from a fairly significant leak.

Some patching efforts to mitigate loss will be undertaken without disruption to pool use, until the pool can be drained and the leak properly addressed sometime after its closing for the year, tentatively scheduled for Aug. 16.

Crawford also noted there have been some technical issues for some pool users and stressed that upon first sign up, it’s best to do so with a computer, and then further interactions will become smart-phone friendly.

In other semi-heat-related Pataskala news, City Administrator Tim Hickin announced that work is underway on a long-sought project to air condition the historic Sterling Theater, located the former Town Hall in downtown Pataskala.

Mayor Mike Compton said of the new cooling system, “That’s going to be huge. You got a hot day in March and it was hot up there. You’re going to see some more action at the theater.”

The mayor said he is going to focus more on the theater in the months ahead.

Councilman Andy Walther asked about the status of the derelict Pataskala Square Mall on East Broad Street.

Last August, with the last of its tenants moving to other locations, the mall’s owners stated their intention to raze and redevelop the site.

Walther inquired as to the status of the still-standing mall.

Pataskala Planning Director Scott Fulton said there have been delays on the owners’ end in getting some required environmental reports back that could affect abatement needs if the building is demolished.

He said the city had granted an extension until Aug. 1 in order to get those reports in hand.

Fulton told council, the owners, “Need to get back to us by Aug. 1.” He ventured his opinion that the course of action that will be sought will indeed be for demolition.

As reported last August, many units within the L-shaped strip mall that faces Broad Street are in advanced decay with compromised rooftops.

In a discussion with The Standard held late last month, Fulton and Hickin talked of the shopping center matter.

Fulton said then, “It’s in process. It’s a cooperative thing for, the most part. It’s not highly contentious. They realize the situation and have submitted an abatement plan… It’s in the works.”
