While we begin to slowly rebook our trips away and map out future adventures, many of us are still mostly reserving travel as a state of mind. And while it may not be the summer most of us planned, this new form of escapism means many of us are reconnecting with old friends via Zoom, hosting virtual dinner parties that otherwise might never have been organised, and discovering corners of our neighbourhoods and local communities that we never would have otherwise stumbled on.

Agua de Madre Competition for Female Filmmakers

Calling all budding Kathryn Bigelows. Agua de Madre has partnered with Curzon Cinemas to launch a film competition aimed at supporting and celebrating British female filmmakers. The pitch? They are asking women to share their lockdown stories or story from the past few months. The winning film will be chosen by a panel of judges, including actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw, director Sara Dunlop, chef Melissa Hemsley, producer Gabrielle Tana, and Curzon and Artificial Eye MD Louisa Dent. The winner will also receive a cash prize of £5,000, and their film will run as a trailer to Josephine Decker's new film Shirley.

Helen Cross Virtual Writing Weekend

L’atelier Des Écrivains, a writers' workshop based in France is hosting “The Final Chapter” a two-day online writing event featuring readings, writing exercise and practical wisdom (September 5-6). Wanda Box

Hosting dinners can be stressful. Created by Natalie Jones, founder of Somerset lifestyle store Caro, Wanda boxes are themed by country and will transport you to the likes of Mexico, Greece or Vietnam. Each bespoke box—sent directly to your home— includes tableware and elegant decorations alongside a menu, grocery list and recipes from a top chef, plus a playlist to listen to for some ambience. Send a box to a few friends and then you can each set your tables with flair and create the ultimate virtual soirée.

Gail’s Hamper

At the start of lockdown Gail’s launched their at-home range and building on that, they neighbourhood cafe group is now launching six carefully curated gift boxes: ”Breakfast In Bed”, ”Farmhouse Breakfast”, “Cookie Box”, “Sofa Picnic”, “Cake Box” and a “Cream Tea Box”. Beautifully packaged and presented, they are the ideal gift or self-care treat. Every bundle includes a Gail’s tote and a lovely notecard to use, or if the box is being gifted, for the customer to request the perfect message.

Santo Remedio At Home

Mexican couple Edson and Natalie started Santo Remedio near London Bridge in 2013 after running pop-ups and supper clubs to bring the flavours of Mexico to the UK. They import speciality ingredients like pasilla, serranos and grasshoppers from Mexico to give their dishes a true taste of Mexico. And they also work with incredible local producers like Gringa Dairy in Peckham. Their dishes are influenced by time spent living in Mexico City, the Yucatan and Oaxaca and now they’ve launched a series of three at-home meal kit boxes—with lamb, duck and chicken— to bring those heady flavours straight to your door step.

Ven Store

Who doesn’t love cashmere? Ven Store is all about travel essentials, designed to make life a little easier. And what makes them spectacular, is while we are all travelling a little less, they are still the cosiest pieces you will want to wear curled up at home. Made with Mongolian yarns and hand-finished between Shanghai and Nepal, each piece is only produced in small quantities to minimise waste. The aesthetic is simple, minimalist and unfussy. The grey- and caramel-coloured pieces are timeless and pair easily with any outfit or aesthetic. As well as pared-back sweaters and cosy cashmere jogging pants, they also sell socks, blankets and eye masks.

Berenjak

Good food fast. That is what so many of us are craving. Soho-restaurant Berenjak run by Kian Samyani, who was previously a chef in the kitchens of the Indian restaurants Gymkhana and Brigadiers has launched a clever grab and go hatch. Now Soho locals and passers-by can grab a quick lunch time or a late-night treat. The restaurant—which draws on the traditions of Iranian home cooking—has created an exclusive menu featuring dishes designed for on the go.

Balance Holidays

If you are able to get away, a destination in Yorkshire offering 3,000 acres of green land is quite possibly the ideal destination. Balance Holidays, the curator, designer and booking platform for high-quality well-being retreats in Europe, have announced the revised dates (16-20 September) for their first-ever UK-based retreat. Taking place on the historic Broughton Hall estate, the new Reconnect and Rewild retreat has been developed in partnership with Tony Riddle, a British ultra-endurance athlete who teaches urbanites how to reconnect with their natural surroundings. Surrounded by moorlands and meadows, Riddle will guide participants through barefoot woodland walks and runs, wild swimming and much more.
