ABERDEEN – Since opening within the past three years, Artisans Marketplace has been a destination for people interested in unique crafts and gift ideas. Since August, a portion of its retail space has undergone a transformation into all Halloween and Christmas décor, which is just the beginning for retail space to capture all of the holidays.
“The future holds a lot of growing,” said store owner Pat Spicer. “In light of all the sadness around, this is a nice place to come for happiness for just a few minutes. You can come in, listen to the music and leave your worries outside.”
As the store’s merchandise has evolved and will continue to do so, shoppers can still peruse a selection of items such as vintage glassware, pillows, pottery and handmade decorations since several rooms are rented to local vendors.
Upon entering the store, though, a Halloween tree is surrounded by décor to celebrate that holiday and the autumn season. The closer patrons get to the back of the store, however, the more they experience a heavy dose of Christmas cheer.
“We have just evolved, and Stevens Auction called to talk about having some items here. We agreed for it to become their outlet store. It’s a good way for people to shop and get unique items at affordable prices. We want to accommodate people’s budgets,” Spicer said.
Part of the cache of Christmas décor came directly from Stevens Auction Company. A giant Santa Claus will be raffled off to benefit Save Aberdeen Landmarks, and there are big plans to celebrate Aberdeen Main Street’s Christmas Open House at Artisans Marketplace.
A grand opening for the Sweet Retreat, also located in the back of the store, is planned for Christmas Open House. In addition to a New Orleans-style ice cream bar, the area offers relaxed seating for those interested in treats such as jelatos, New Orleans ice cream, Jubilations cheesecake, Sugaree’s Bakery cakes and items from the Friendship House.
Artisans Marketplace already offers veteran-owned The General’s Hot Sauce and Vineyard of the Vine drink mixes and various spices.
There are plans during the upcoming seasons for the store to offer live trees and pumpkins, and Randy Emerson will make live garland arrangements.
As Christmas decorations are sold in the coming months, Mardi Gras merchandise will be phased in, and the store will be the exclusive place to purchase tickets for next year’s Mardi Gras ball in Aberdeen.
