Troopers with the Kentucky State Police will be increasing their presence on Interstate and US Highways to take part in the nationwide Operation C.A.R.E., or Crash Awareness Reduction Effort, during the upcoming Labor Day holiday weekend.

Post 2 Public Information Officer Trooper Rob Austin states this weekend, September 4th through 7th, Troopers and officers will put a high emphasis on all traffic enforcement violations, including speeding, failure to wear a seatbelt, impaired or distracted driving, and commercial vehicle enforcement. He adds Troopers are asking all drivers to do their part to keep Kentucky’s roadways safe by obeying Kentucky traffic laws, operating their vehicle with courtesy, and being aware of others while driving.

Trooper Austin is offering drivers several tips to increase safety awareness on the roads this weekend including slowing down, especially in bad weather, construction areas, heavy traffic, and unfamiliar locations. He is also reminding motorists to move over for first responders and states Kentucky passed a law in 2003 requiring all motorists to move to the adjacent lane when approaching an emergency or public safety vehicle. If it is impossible or unsafe to change lanes, motorists must slow down and use caution.

Motorists are also being encouraged to eliminate distractions while driving, stay alert, monitor weather and road conditions wherever you may be traveling, and keep your phones put away while operating your vehicle. KSP is also suggesting motorists leave early for their destinations, as with all holiday weekends it is highly likely more vehicles will be on the roadway, which could increase traffic and create travel delays. Trooper Austin is also reminding drivers and passengers to buckle up per Kentucky law.

If you observe a troublesome driver or any suspicious road conditions, please contact your local KSP Post or law enforcement agency.
