Public safety officials caution safety this holiday weekend - Vallejo Times-Herald

Labor Day is upon us, and so are the eyes of public safety officials.

The California Highway Patrol is keeping an eye out for speeders and other traffic violators on area roadways while California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control agents will monitor area businesses to enforce alcoholic beverage laws.

The CHP advises motorists to buckle up, avoid distractions, drive safely and designate a driver if planning on an event where drinking alcohol will occur.

During this time last year, 45 people died in crashes throughout the state and more than 1,000 were arrested in connection with DUI, the CHP said.

“Getting behind the wheel of a vehicle while under the influence is extremely dangerous, not only to the person driving but to everyone on the road with them,” advised CHP Commissioner Warren Stanley in a press statement. “If you travel this holiday weekend, make smart decisions and drive to arrive.”

Expect CHP officers en masse on area roadways through 11:59 p.m. Monday.

ABC agents, meanwhile, are slated to visit ABC-licensed businesses to check for compliance with public health orders and those regarding liquor service.

Licensees must make sure employees are wearing face coverings and practicing socialdistancing measures, officials said.

“Improving overall safety in communities is a goal of the ABC,” said ABC Director Eric Hirata in a press statement. “Californians can do their part to keep everyone safe by planning ahead and take alternative transportation if they plan to drive somewhere and consume alcohol.”

ABC has developed a free online training tool for alcoholic beverage licensees and servers that can help prevent DUI’s. The training can be found on ABC’s website at https://www.abc.ca.gov/education/lead-training/.
