For the first time since 1993, Liberty High School’s “Cathedral of Wrestling,” Memorial Gym, will not host a major wrestling tournament over the holidays.
Bethlehem Holiday Wrestling Classic directors Rich and Sandy Cabrera announced Tuesday afternoon that the 2020 event will be canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“After much discussion and careful consideration, the Hurricane Wrestling Club has decided to cancel the 2020 Bethlehem Holiday Wrestling Classic," they wrote in an email to local media. “During these uncertain times, it is extremely difficult and risky to plan a fundraising tournament under the current restrictions and potential shutdowns. We sincerely believe that the health and safety of the wrestlers, coaches, referees, trainers, volunteers and fans far outweighs the benefit to our club.”
The tournament had been held every season since 1994.
The BHWC joins a lengthening list of canceled major tournaments, such as the Walsh Jesuit Ironman and the Beast of the East.
The Cabreras said they are ready to resume the event when circumstances allow.
“Our hope is that 2021 will result in a safer environment so that we can all be together and enjoy the sport that we love!,” they wrote.
