KEARNEY, Neb. (KSNB) - For the first time March, the entire University of Nebraska-Volleyball team was able to hit the floor together for practice once again.
On August 5, the NCAA Division II Presidents Council cancelled their fall sports championship. In their statement, the Presidents Council said “it was not feasible to hold fall championships as planned or to postpone them to the spring while prioritizing the health and well-being of student-athletes.”
A little over a week later, the MIAA decided to postpone the fall sports season to the spring.
Despite the cancellations and the postponements, the UNK Volleyball team is committed to continuing to push through and continue to improve.
The Lopers have been a powerhouse over the past two decades. Just a year ago they only lost one match all season, that loss coming in the National Championship.
Although all of this has been very difficult on the team, they continue to remain positive and are glad they get the opportunity to continue to play together.
Head Coach Rick Squiers said these practices are absolutely critical to his team.
“Once it looked like we maybe weren’t going to have (practices), you started to really see the downside of that,” Squiers said. “When you’re an athlete and you’ve put all of this time into it and have trained your whole life for this kind of thing, I think there’s a part of you that really needs to be in here going through the process. So that’s what we’re going to do and when they tell us it’s time to play again we’re going to be ready.”
Squiers said this will also be a great opportunity to try new things and different rotations.
On top of practices and workouts, the team will also hold five scrimmages this fall that will be open to the public. Giving players the opportunity to play in front of their home fans.
“I think the fans are probably eager to see something live rather than just watching professionals play on TV,” Senior MK Wolfe said. “I’m excited for that, get some real action and kind of make it seem like a real game.”
“Yeah when we heard about that I got really excited,” Senior Maddie Squiers said. “None of us have played in a real game in so long so even if it is just an intrasquad scrimmage, just to be able to have some fans here and have a little competition is gonna be something to really look forward to.”
The first scrimmage will take place on September 25, starting at 5:30 p.m. For the scrimmage, they will split into three different teams and play three matches.
