Stillwater’s Holiday Hope expects record year - TwinCities.com-Pioneer Press

As more Minnesotans lose their jobs because of COVID-19, organizers of Community Thread’s annual Holiday Hope program say they expect to double the number of people served this year.

Even before the pandemic, Holiday Hope, which provides gifts and meals to low-income families, seniors and adults with disabilities, had grown by almost 40 percent in the last decade. This year, organizers say, the need is greater than ever.

The program, which previously served households and individuals in the Stillwater Area School District, has expanded to include residents of Woodbury, Oakdale and Landfall. The organization is partnering with Christian Cupboard Emergency Food Shelf in Oakdale.

Christian Cupboard previously partnered with King of Kings Lutheran Church in Woodbury on a holiday giving program, but that ended in 2018.

“As holidays programs, like the one that was run by Christian Cupboard and King of Kings, come to an end, people are left with no place to turn during the holidays,” said Jennifer Kmecik, Community Thread volunteer center director.

More than 1,100 people, including 610 children, have already registered for this year’s program. “Each year the need continues to grow, and we know this year will be no different — especially due to the impact of COVID-19,” she said.

Kmecik said the program, which is in its 50th year, is in need of sponsors given the record number of people they will serve this year. “I’m hoping people will get into the holiday-giving mindset after the election,” she said.

Sponsors, including businesses, churches and individuals, are asked to donate cash or purchase gift cards, which are directed toward families or individuals in need.

Clients must be undergoing financial hardship and not participating in any other holiday-giving programs. Proof of residency and identification are required.

Further information and sponsorship forms are available online at CommunityThreadMN.org, by phone at 651-439-7434, and by email at HolidayHope@CommunityThreadMN.org.
