International fire fight
Canadians, Latinos and family come together to fight the fire that swept through the McKenzie River Valley
The McKenzie Highway (Highway 126) into the areas affected by the Holiday Farm Fire will reopen to all traffic at noon Friday, according to the Oregon Department of Transportation.
The highway has been closed to general traffic since the fire but reopened to pilot car-guided caravans this week.
The transportation department said travelers should expect delays on the highway as tree fallers and other hazard mitigation teams continue to work on clearing the roadway.
"Travelers should prepare for lengthy delays at multiple work zones as crews continue
recovery work. There is the potential for falling trees and rocks, debris remains on the
side of the road, guardrail is missing and over 400 signs need to be replaced," the transportation department said in a news release.
The speed limit has been reduced to 45 mph between mileposts 28 and 38.
Before the full reopening, there will be two caravans Friday morning moving between the road closure points on the west end two miles east of Vida at mile 27.55 to east of Finn Rock at milepost 38, one direction at a time. The west-to-east caravan begins at 8 a.m. The east-to-west caravan begins at 9 a.m., the transportation department said.
Holiday Farm Fire sees no growth, 67% contained
Despite hot and dry weather conditions and more active fire behavior, the Holiday Farm Fire saw no growth Wednesday, the Oregon Department of Forestry reported Thursday. The fire has burned 173,094 acres and is now 67% contained.
Firefighters working on the night shift have focused on patrolling and extinguishing hot spots along Highway 126, ODF said.
Smoke will be present within the fire perimeter for the foreseeable future. Interior smokes are well within the perimeter and ODF asks that they not be reported to 911.
Many areas may remain closed indefinitely as land managers work to assess safety hazards resulting from the fire. Recreationists and others visiting the forest are encouraged to check for closure information before heading out. Information for the Willamette National Forest can be found at fs.usda.gov/main/willamette/fire. Information on Bureau of Land Management closures can be found at blm.gov/alert/fire-closures-and-fire-restrictions.
Road and area closures remain in place for the safety of the public and firefighters. Before heading out, check the status of the area and the roadways by visiting tripcheck.com or oregon.gov/odot/Pages/Wildfire.aspx.
