FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA21) - Hoosiers, Buckeyes and others are more likely to stay at home this Thanksgiving, according to one of the nation's leading travel specialists.
The American Automobile Association -- or AAA -- on Thursday released a holiday travel forecast that calls for the biggest decrease in more than a decade.
AAA said the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, including health concerns and high unemployment, will keep more Americans home.
The association expect at least a 10 percent decline in travel compared to the same weekend in 2019. That would be the largest one-year decrease since the "Great Recession" in 2008.
“The wait-and-see travel trend continues to impact final travel decisions, especially for the Thanksgiving holiday,” said Paula Twidale, senior vice president of AAA Travel. “The decision to travel is a personal one. For those who are considering making a trip, the majority will go by car, which provides the flexibility to modify holiday travel plans up until the day of departure.”
Those who do take a road trip are more likely to keep it short -- both in distance and in the amount of time away from home.
Travel by automobile is projected to fall 4.3 percent to 47.8 million travelers, AAA said. That would account for 95 percent of all holiday travel, reflecting a pared-down demand for flights.
