EAST LIVERPOOL — A local church is spearheading an effort to make Christmas a little merrier this year for city seniors.
Grace City Church is asking locals to help those who may have limited resources, transportation and also have little social opportunities compared to normal due to the pandemic.
Lisa Smith, who shares pastoral duties at the church with her husband Jeff, has Adopt-a-Senior trees at both the church and Turquoise Tables, where someone can either nominate a senior or either take a tag – much like an Angel Tree except for adults.
Turquoise Tables is a non-profit shop that helps to fund the outreach ministry for the Grace City Church.
“These seniors do not need to meet any special requirements except be local to East Liverpool. This isn’t even based on income, but we all know examples like Mr. So-and-So, who lives by us and is widowed, has no children and relies on his great-niece to visit once a month,” Smith continues. “He would be a great candidate, because who doesn’t love an unexpected, thoughtful Christmas gift.”
Each tag has a senior’s name on the front and list of his/her likes on the back. Once that tag is chosen by a person, that person shops for the seniors, wraps the gifts, adds the original tag and brings it back to the church, which will deliver it.
Smith is asking that each senior receive a $20 gift or gifts – there is no maximum amount, and some tags may even include a husband and wife combo.
Adoptive Santas are allowed to include as much information about themselves as they are comfortable with, as it’s ok that they know who their secret Santa is.
If someone would rather donate cash and have the church shop for recipients, that also is an option available.
Smith asks that all senior nominations need to be in by Nov. 30.
Tags are ready to be adopted by Dec. 2 with all wrapped gifts returned to the church by Dec. 18, so they can be delivered before Christmas Eve.
Grace City Church is located at 225 W. 5th St. in downtown East Liverpool, a few doors down from Turquoise Tables. For more information, either call 330-385-2122 or 330-383-1009 as well as visit the Facebook pages for either the church or the store.
