THIS WEEK: Holiday season begins in earnest starting today - Houston Chronicle

Holiday season is upon us with religious celebrations beginning to dot the calendar.

Today is the first day of Advent for many Christian faiths. Advent begins the celebration of the birth of Christ. The annual event begins the fourth Sunday before Christmas and ends on Christmas Eve.

Hanukkah begins on Thursday, Dec. 10, and ends on Friday, Dec. 18, this year.

Kwanzaa is set to start on Dec. 26 and last until Jan. 1.

Holiday lights

The Sugar Land Skeeters have officially opened the sixth-annual Sugar Land Holiday Lights, cooled by Just Fix It.

More than 3 million lights are shining throughout Constellation Field, with the festivities closing on Jan. 3. Tickets can be purchased by visiting www.sugarlandholidaylights.com, calling the Skeeters at 281-240-4487 or visiting the Skeeters ticket office at Constellation Field during business hours.

The pricing breakdown for Sugar Land Holiday Lights tickets are:

  Sunday-Thursday (6-9 p.m.): $15 for adults; $12 for children and seniors

  Friday-Saturday (6-10 p.m.): $16 for adults; $14 for children and seniors

  New Year’s Eve (Fireworks Show): $18 for adults; $14 for children and seniors

All Sugar Land Holiday Lights attendees will be required to wear a mask while inside the facility and will have their temperature checked upon entry. Sanitation stations will also be located around Constellation Field for the event. The Skeeters will also be enforcing social distancing measures recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Sugar Land City Council

The Sugar Land City Council is scheduled to meet at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1, in regular session.

The meeting is limited to city of Sugar Land staff and essential personnel to limit the spread of COVID-19.

The meeting will be livestreamed at www.sugarlandtx.gov/1238/SLTV-16-Live-Video or www.youtube.com/user/SugarLandTXgov/live. Written comments may be submitted via email to citysec@sugarlandtx.gov by 3 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1. For questions or assistance, contact the Office of the City Secretary 281-275-2730.

Among the items on the agenda is a one-time variance for the Sugar Land Skeeters to present fireworks after 10:30 p.m. on New Year’s Eve 2020 at Constellation Field. The fireworks show would allow for a display from midnight to 12:10 a.m. to ring in the new year.

If the ordinance passes, a second reading is scheduled for Dec. 15.

Also on the agenda is an ordinance adopting voter-passed charter amendments, including one allowing City Council members to serve three-year terms on the council instead of the current two.

Rosenberg City Council

The Rosenberg City Council is scheduled to meet in regular session at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1. The meeting will be held via telephone/video conference.

Ribbon cutting

The Katy Chamber of Commerce will welcome Martin Melkonian State Farm Agency with a ribbon cutting ceremony at noon Tuesday, Dec. 1. The agency is located at 5507 Morton Road, Ste. 101 in Katy.

Free car wash

In support of Hope For Three, Quick Quack Car Wash will wash cars for free on Monday, Nov. 30, with donations received benefiting the non-profit organization.

Hope For Three is 501c3 nonprofit and autism advocacy group providing resources and support to families living with an autism spectrum disorder.

Rope cutting

The Fulshear Katy Area Chamber of Commerce will hold a rope cutting event to welcome The Ark from 11 a.m. to noon Friday, Nov. 4, at 21402 Merchants Way in Katy.

The Ark is an event center which recently opened to serve the great Katy area. It can accommodate up to 300 guests and has adjacent rooms for groups of 20-80 people.

Healthcare update

The Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce is presenting “Innovation in the Healthcare Sector” from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 2.

The chamber’s Healthcare Division will host Drs. Swarna Balasubramaniam, Lance Black, Ashvin Dewan and Erin Flores as they discuss numerous topics including attracting talent and new technologies to the Texas Medical Center; physician contributions to healthcare innovation; and how doctors can spur innovation while still maintaining practices.
