It's no secret that 2020 has been a unique year.

The need to give is still present this holiday season, maybe even more so.

Here are just a few opportunities to give in the Sioux Falls area:

The Banquet

COVID-19 has increased the need of volunteers to prepare and serve meals for The Banquet in Sioux Falls.

All meals are served to-go and six to eight people are needed per shift. People interested in volunteering in serving meals can sign up on The Banquet’s website.

With a partnership with Lewis Drug, The Banquet is putting together Christmas hygiene kits for guests. Kits will contain items such as soap, shampoo and lotion. The packets will be available for purchase at Lewis Drug for $10. The Banquet will need 1,500 packages to fulfill needs. The packages will be pre-filled and additional donated money will be used to purchase items such as laundry detergent, toilet paper and dish washing soap.

In addition to holiday needs, the organization is in need of the following food items: small bottles of water, ground coffee, large coffee filters, canola and olive oil, butter; large portions of ground cinnamon, granulated garlic, seasoning salt, black pepper, cumin, oregano, ground mustard and poultry seasoning; one gallon size of real mayonnaise and white vinegar, metal teaspoons and micro-fiber towels.

Personal care or office items also needed are: stamps, feminine hygiene products, hotel toiletries. Donations can be delivered to The Banquet’s main location at 900 E. 8th St. from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Bishop Dudley

The Bishop Dudley Hospitality House is in high need of a few key items.

Toilet paper, an item typically entirely donated, has now thanks to COVID-19 had to be purchased for the last few months to the tune of about $900 each month, a cost the organization wasn’t anticipating.

The hospitality house is also in need of paper bowls, paper plates and paper towels for the kitchen.

As winter approaches, winter gear, especially gloves, are needed more than ever. The organization has been over capacity for a couple of months, and gloves are the number one ask from guests, said marketing coordinator Dakotah Jordan.

Goodwill Shoe and Mitten Program

Goodwill Sioux Falls locations are accepting donations of new shoes, socks a hat and mittens to give to elementary aged children in the area.

Registrations for those interested in participating are limited to a first-come, first-served basis. Information on how to register can be found on the Goodwill of the Great Plains website.

Boys and Girls Club of the Sioux Empire

The Boys and Girls Club is accepting donations and toys for children in the area for a Christmas Wish List and Toy Bash. The club serves more than 1,200 children every day. Those interested in donating can sign up to collect toys up until Dec. 16.

Toys can be dropped off on Dec. 17 and Dec. 18 at any of the Sioux Falls Boys & Girls Club locations.

More information can be found on the Boys & Girls Club website.

Call to Freedom

Call to Freedom, a nonprofit that aids survivors of human trafficking, is asking for holiday items for clients.

The organization is in need of toys, blankets, winter coats, winter gloves, toiletries, hygiene items, clothing, household items such as décor or small appliances and gift cards to stores such as Walmart, Dollar Tree, Lewis Drug, Target and HyVee.

Information on how to donate can be found on Call to Freedom’s website.
