We all love decorating our home for the holidays, but oftentimes it’s not realistic (nor budget-friendly) to splurge on new decorations year after year. Instead, incorporating handmade décor using natural elements may just be the most simple and effective way to spruce up your holiday beautification process without hitting the stores—again.
And maybe that’s why dried citrus garlands are making a comeback. They’re environmentally friendly, easy on the wallet, take minimal effort to create, and can infuse some bright color into your space on gray winter days. Better yet, the dried fruit will leave your home smelling fantastic.
We drew inspiration from Minneapolis-based blogger Erin François, (someone we love chatting with at Midwest Home) who features a straightforward dried orange garland explainer on her blog François et Moi. As she alludes to in her post, natural home décor for the holidays is an age-old Nordic tradition and the most perfect way to dress up and decorate a modern home.
We tried her DIY project ourselves and learned the process of making these garlands is deliciously uncomplicated—as far as DIYs go, at least. You’ll need an oven, a sharp knife, and nimble fingers to string twine between the dried fruit slices. Hang the garlands on your holiday tree (if you have one), around a banister, across a curtain rod, or wherever else you need a slice of extra holiday cheer.
Supplies
- Oranges, lemons, limes, or grapefruit
- Twine (or another durable string)
- Baking sheet
- Parchment paper
- Paper towels (or a kitchen cloth you don’t mind getting wet or stained)
- Knife
- Scissors
Instructions
- Heat oven to 250ºF.
- Prepare baking sheet with a layer of parchment paper
- Thinly slice citrus fruits (see photos for reference) and use towels to absorb any of the fruits’ excess moisture
- Line the slices on your baking sheet, making sure none overlap
- Bake for 2.5 hours, flipping halfway through. (Slices should only be slightly browned.)
- Cool the slices. Using scissors, make two small holes on either side of the slice’s center, and thread the twine through the holes.
- Hang wherever you please!
- Take a picture, post it to Instagram, and tag @midwesthomemag so we can see your fabulous fruit masterpiece.
