If you find yourself in Lincoln City, stop by the locally-owned Christmas Cottage (3305 S.W. Highway 101, Lincoln City; 541-996-2230; christmascottage.net) – a city staple for more than 45 years.
A few things that set this Christmas shop apart from others is the warm service, the incredible selection (featuring more than 25,000 ornaments from all around the world) and they’re open seven days a week, year-round; closed Thanksgiving and Christmas.
From German nutcrackers and beautiful European glass ornaments to angels, stockings and Santa figurines, they have it all. Added personalization’s are an option and make ornaments extra special for gifting. The holidays may look different this year, make them extra special by turning your home into your own winter wonderland.
Hours are 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily. Up to 20 people are currently allowed in the store at once. Stop in during the week as the weekends fill up quickly.
Along with supporting locally owned shops during these unprecedented times, supporting locally-owned restaurants is just as important. This year, more than ever, many restaurants are getting creative in order to stay afloat and offering meal kits to-go. For some, this is just for the holiday season, while others are doing it throughout the entire pandemic. Check out your local favorites for to-go options and pick up a gift card for someone on your list while you’re at it!
For example, take the stress out of holiday cooking and still get the credit by ordering an upscale Christmas dinner for four from RingSide Steakhouse (2165 W. Burnside Street, Portland; 503-223-1513; ringsidesteakhouse.com), featuring prime rib, mashed potatoes, roasted carrots with herbs, bread and a caramel apple pie from Willamette Valley Pie Company. They’re also taking pre-orders for their New Year’s Eve kits for two. All you have to do is order your kit online and prepare to heat, serve and enjoy! See their website for ordering details.
Another great option is to build your own holiday feast at Elephants Delicatessen (115 N.W. 22nd Avenue, Portland; 503-299-6304; elephantsdeli.com). Their Christmas menu offers more than a dozen scratch-made hors d’oeuvres and side dishes as well as entrees, dinner packages, sweet treats of all sorts and even brunch for Christmas morning. Again, they take the guess work out of dinner, you just have to pick up your meal at one of their locations or order local delivery.
If you plan on taking on all of the holiday cooking yourself, consider the quick on-the-spot sharpening service at Hawthorne Cutlery (3208 S.E. Hawthorne Boulevard, Portland; 503-234-8898; hawthornecutlery.net). The charge is just $5 per kitchen knife and is just one more way to assure that your holiday dinner goes smoothly. Visit this locally-owned shop 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday; closed Sunday and Monday. Lots of unique offerings!
