INDEPENDENCE, Ohio—Though the holidays may be celebrated differently this year, Independence has continued their tradition of an annual holiday tree lighting event with a drive-through light display in the historic downtown area.
On Saturday, Dec. 5, residents’ cars lined Brecksville Rd., waiting to drive along the set route to view Christmas lights. The route began on West Public Square, continued down Elmwood Ave., through Elmwood Park, and then along Selig Dr. The route ended in front of the Civic Center, where families who pre-registered had the chance to meet Santa from their cars.
Mayor Greg Kurtz and his wife Lyn were also in the sleigh with Santa at the end of the route. Along the front of the Civic Center, donations were being accepted for the local food pantry and the Salvation Army was present. City employees also handed out stockings with candy and small toys to the children who attended the event.
Throughout the drive, residents could tune in to the radio station 93.7 to hear Christmas music and commentary specific to Independence and the lighting tour. The night was scheduled to end with a firework display at 7:30 p.m. when the drive through was closed.
In addition to a socially distant tree lighting display, the city will also be hosting a five-minute Zoom call with Santa. The Independence Post stated that families can call the Community Services Department to schedule a call with Santa between 6 and 7 p.m. on Dec. 13.
