Top health officials say if you traveled or gathered with family over Thanksgiving, you should assume you are infected and get tested this week, about five to 10 days after the gathering. People also also encouraged to avoid contact with those who are over the age of 65.
Doctors are bracing for another deadly wave in COVID-19 cases.
This comes after airports across the country saw the busiest travel day on Sunday since the pandemic started. Monday, ABC News reported the Transportation Security Administration screened 1,176,091 people at its checkpoints in airports across the U.S. on Sunday.
Americans gathered from coast to coast over the holiday weekend. According to the TSA, anywhere from 800,000 to more than 1 million travelers made their way through airport checkpoints on any day during the past week.
Now, Dr. Anthony Fauci said restrictions and travel advisories will be necessary for the Christmas holiday.
"What we expect, unfortunately, as we go for the next couple of weeks into December, is that we might see a surge superimposed on the surge we are already in, and I say that not to frighten people, I say it because it is not too late to do something about this," Fauci said.
Fauci also said the arrival of vaccines offers a "light at the end of the tunnel." In fact, preparations are underway for distribution. United Airlines is now shipping doses of Pfizer's vaccine.
Moderna is also expected to apply for emergency-use authorization for its vaccine.
