Recently the statewide figures have been consistently dropping, at least when averaged to smooth out the usual day-to-day fluctuations. The average number of COVID-19 patients each day peaked in the fall just before Thanksgiving at more than 6,100. Since then, the average steadily dropped to roughly 4,300 by Christmas, roughly 4,000 by New Year’s Day and about 3,500 by Friday.
