The holiday weekend has been a busy one for the ski industry here in North Carolina! Some of the ski operations on Saturday, Jan 16, saw upwards of 3+" of snow.
More snow is expected, in spots, for the rest of this holiday weekend, mostly across the Boone zone.
The holiday weekend last January, 2020, wasn't so robust or as kind for the ski folks. In the lead up to MLK Day last year, on the 20th, we had been going through a bit of a warm stretch.
High temperatures for Asheville had been running in the lower to mid-60s, with some areas in the upper 60s from January 10th to 15th; Boone was in the mid to upper 50s.
Charlotte had a number of days with highs in the lower 70s.
Finally, on the night of January 19th, colder air arrived, and the snow guns were able to get started making snow once again. Needless to say, ski conditions for the 2020 holiday weekend weren't the best and it was slim pickings when searching for well-covered ski runs.
The lead up to the holiday weekend this year, 2021, was splendid. Mother Nature was active prior to the holiday weekend adding natural snow to ski base totals.
On top of that, snow-making temperatures have been spot on at night and the western NC resorts have had the snow guns blasting! Some base totals run from 50" to 90"-plus of snow!
If you are thinking about skiing over the rest of this holiday weekend, you may be out of luck. Many of the ski operators (and tubing at Hawksnest) are sold out through the weekend.
You may luck out and find some lift tickets available, but, you will need to do your homework and have a lucky coin in your pocket.
Go on line or call the operation of your choice, and see if they have anything available for you. If you can't get a ticket for this weekend, then next weekend will be pretty nice!
2021 has been much different than January of 2020.
