The fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic and the social unrest that rocked the country in 2020 will continue to impact lives and livelihoods this year. So it’s safe to say that many job seekers are looking for companies that will prioritize their employees’ health and safety, offer flexibility, and advocate for diversity and equality.
Look no further: Career website Glassdoor dropped its 13th annual “100 Best Places to Work” list this week, which is drawn from the anonymous feedback of the employees who actually work at these companies. Workers fill out a review describing their job, the workplace environment and the company as an employer over the past year. And global management group Bain & Company tops the 2021 employees choice awards list, followed by tech company NVIDIA NVDA, -0.04% and In-N-Out burger.
“They have put forth a very thoughtful COVID response plan, and really upped their game on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the wake of recent events in the US,” wrote one anonymous Bain employee based in Chicago.
An In-N-Out employee raved that the West Coast burger chain serves “Amazing people, awesome leadership, I feel cared about every single day and we make the best burgers on the planet!”
Some other familiar names rounding out the top 10 include Google GOOG, +0.63%, Delta Air Lines DAL, -0.21%, Lululemon LULU, -1.21% and Microsoft MSFT, +0.35%.
“Especially with COVID, management’s priority has been the wellbeing and comfort of employees,” wrote in one Delta worker.
Bain & Company, Apple AAPL, +1.82% and Google have been ranked on every single one of Glassdoor’s 100 Best Places to Work lists since the ranking began 13 years ago.
Indeed, more than one in four (28, in fact) of the top 100 places to work in 2021 are tech companies, although Glassdoor notes that amid the COVID-19 pandemic, there are six biotech and pharmaceutical employers featured among workers’ favorite companies this year, which is a 200% increase from last year. They include Johnson & Johnson JNJ, -0.29% at No. 24 , Pfizer PFE, -1.06% at No. 39 and Eli Lilly and Company LLY, +4.12% at No. 87.
These health trends aligned with U.S. News & World Report’s Best Jobs Rankings, also released this week, which named physician assistant (median salary of $112,260 a year) as the best position to combine a six-figure salary with high job satisfaction. This was followed by software developer ($107,510 a year); nurse practitioner ($110,700 a year); medical and health services manager ($100,980 a year); and physician ($206,500 a year).

On the tech front, Glassdoor’s “50 Best Jobs in America” for 2020 named front-end engineers (computer programmers who make a median base salary of $105,240 a year) at No. 1, followed by Java developer ($83,589), data scientist ($107,801), product manager ($117,713) and devops engineer ($107,310).
What’s more, cloud software company Salesforce CRM, +1.07% is the only employer to land on all five of Glassdoor’s lists of the best companies to work for this year, including large U.S. companies, as well as the best places to work in Canada, France, Germany and the United Kingdom. “Inclusive, best pay and benefits, smartest co-workers, excellent COVID response,” said one Salesforce employee.
