Signs point to local retailers having a good holiday season by ringing in the sales.
A Texarkana Chamber of Commerce official said businesses were doing what needed to be done to make last year a prosperous one.
"It was different and challenging this year," said Mike Malone, chamber president and CEO. "Our retail outlets sharpened their pencils not only to compete on prices, but to compete on customer service for the holiday shopping experience," he said.
"Also, the supply chain was challenged in providing the merchandise to meet customer demands. We do not know the exact amount of local sales but we appreciate and applaud the patronizing of our local businesses by our local citizens. It is exciting to see customers lined up at the check out counters, the amount of traffic and many congested parking lots."
Even national retailers experienced success overall.
"Our online ordering was key to our success," said Jonathan Luna, guest service team leader at Target-Texarkana. "It tripled our business, in fact."
In addition, despite 2020 being a very different year for Target, shoppers still came out in large numbers.
"Much of it was the things you expect," he said. "We sold lots of essentials. Particularly hot items were toilet paper, household cleaners, which are still moving. Very grateful our shoppers still came out."
Luna describes holiday sales for them as being a bit down, by comparison, but a good year over all caused things to balance out.
"Electronics were a hot ticket for us as well," he said. "Clothing, interestingly, rallied our sales as well."
Overall, Luna was satisfied with how they came out of the year.
"We are happy we did as well as we have, considering," he said. "And we are very optimistic for the year ahead.
According to a December online survey presented to more than 1,500 organizations, a third of respondents expected an increase in customer demand between 10 and 15 percent for the year. More than half expected at least a 5 percent increase. In addition, many of them listed online sales of one form or another contributing to the rosier than expected outlook.
In the holiday season, according to a press release from ResultsCX, an organization that collects data on customer experiences, despite a year dealing with the pandemic, the outlook looked good overall from the 2020 holiday shopping season.
Major retail entities are still collating their figures from the season for the year.
