A 22-year-old passenger died early Saturday morning in western Polk County after the vehicle’s 27-year-old driver lost control of the car, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Around 2:54 a.m., the sports utility vehicle was headed west on Holiday Lake Drive toward Orangeview Lane. When the driver lost control of the vehicle, it left the road and struck a concrete light pole before hitting a metal street sign support. The car then continued west, turned over and hit a tree, the Florida Highway Patrol said in an email statement.

The driver suffered minor injuries. Both of the vehicle’s occupants were from Holiday.
