Syracuse, N.Y. -- The number of patients hospitalized because of Covid-19 in New York has dropped by 29% since the holiday surge, according to an update from Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s office.
Across New York, 6,593 people are hospitalized because of the coronavirus, according to Cuomo. That’s down nearly 300 patients from the previous day.
There are 1,285 people in intensive care, down 43 from the previous day.
Yet dozens of people continue to die. Saturday, another 107 deaths were reported, according to the governor. Since the pandemic began, the state has reported 37,118 deaths.
The state confirmed another 8,316 cases of Covid-19 on Saturday. That’s based on 234,708 test results -- or a 3.54% positive rate.
The state’s weekly average of positive cases continues to decrease.
Each day for the past week, an average of 3.83% tests in New York came back positive. That’s down from a 4.04% weekly average reported just two days ago.
In Central New York, that same average ticked up a tiny amount in the past 24 hours. Today, the weekly positive rate is 1.67%. On Saturday, that weekly rate was slightly lower, at 1.64%, according to state data.
