Alabamians will not pay sales tax this Friday through Sunday on severe weather preparedness items.

The 2021 Severe Weather Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday will begin on Friday, Feb. 26, at 12:01 a.m. and last through Sunday, Feb. 28, at midnight.

The sales tax holiday will give people the opportunity to purchase items that would be needed in a severe weather event without being taxed.

At a cost of $60 or less per item, tax-exempt items include batteries (AAA, AA, C, D, 6-volt and 9-volt), cellular phone batteries and chargers, portable self-powered or battery-powered radios, two-way radios, weather band radios or NOAA weather radios, and portable self-powered light sources (battery-powered flashlights, lanterns or emergency glow sticks).

Also exempt at $60 or less per item include tarps, plastic sheeting, plastic drop cloths, other flexible/waterproof sheeting, ground anchor systems (bungee cords or ropes, tie-down kits, etc.), duct tape, non-electric food storage coolers or water storage containers, non-electric can openers, artificial ice, blue ice, ice packs, reusable ice, self-contained first aid kits, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, and gas or diesel fuel tanks or containers.

Plywood, window film, or other materials designed to protect window coverings are also tax-exempt at $60 or less per item.

Portable generators or power cords will also be tax-exempt in a single purchase of $1,000 or less.

Coin batteries and automobile and boat batteries are taxable.

According to the Alabama Department of Revenue website, Carbon Hill, Dora, Jasper, Nauvoo, Oakman, Parrish, Sipsey and Eldridge, as well as Walker County, will be participating in the sales tax holiday. Cordova will not participate, and Sumiton's participation status is not known.

Severe Weather Preparedness Week is being observed in Alabama (Feb. 21-26) in conjunction with the Severe Weather Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday.

As part of Severe Weather Preparedness Week, The National Weather Service is encouraging Alabamians to do tornado safety drills this week and to make sure NOAA weather radios are programmed correctly.
