The City of Des Moines announced Monday that it will recognize Juneteenth as an official holiday.City buildings and offices will be closed every year on June 18, or on the adjoining weekday when the holiday falls on a weekend.Juneteenth celebrates the day union forces announced freedom from slavery in Texas in 1865.“Over the past several years, the discussion has grown to observe this important anniversary as an official City holiday,” city manager Scott Sanders said. “We hope by commemorating this date, we can better illustrate the significance of Juneteenth and generate greater recognition throughout our community and the state.”
