MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis city council members are discussing making Juneteenth a paid holiday for City employees.
The holiday, which takes place June 19, is also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, and celebrates the emancipation of slaves in the U.S.
Shelby County Government became the first county in Tennessee last year to make the day a paid holiday for employees.
City leaders are discussing whether the holiday would replace another paid holiday, or simply be added.
City council members are working on how that would work and which other paid holiday would possibly be replaced.
The city of Clarksville, Tenn. recently voted to make Juneteenth a paid holiday for its employees.
Local officials told FOX13 that replacing an existing holiday is the most likely option.
City council member Martavious Jones said President’s Day is an option.
“There are some that are not going to be on the table,” he said. “For instance, Christmas and New Year’s.”
More than 14,000 city employees would get to celebrate the Juneteenth paid holiday.
