A point-of-sale system powering Colorado dispensaries went down Tuesday on the biggest marijuana holiday of the year.
Denver-based FlowHub said an outage caused by a third-party authentication service caused the service to crash on April 20, colloquially known as 4/20.
It’s unclear how many dispensaries in the state have been affected and a company representative was not immediately available for comment.
The stoner holiday is the highest-selling day for marijuana at The Chronic Factory, a medical-only shop in Denver. General manager Lisa DeGroat said her system crashed about 10 a.m. and the business has since fired up an older version of the POS to process sales.
Transactions typically take about 15 minutes, DeGroat said, but the system is running so slowly that waits are up to about an hour.
It’s been a “hectic, world-ending, planes crashing” kind of day, she said.
FlowHub processes more than $3 billion in sales annually for more than 1,000 dispensaries in Colorado and 13 other states, according to its website.
