Replanting and rebuilding efforts in the wake of last year's wildfire in the McKenzie River Valley got another helping hand Sunday in the form of cash and seedling donations.
Timber Unity, a natural resources industries activism organization, donated 2,700 seedlings of various species and $7,000 on Sunday to fund a mobile tool library for those rebuilding after the Holiday Farm Fire. Timber Unity has made many such donations across the state since the fires, including funding the creation a tool lending library in Blue River.
The Holiday Farm Fire burned 173,000 acres of the McKenzie River Valley after a wind storm on Labor Day. More than 400 homes were destroyed in the fire zone. Seedlings for replanting burned trees have been hard to find because of wildfires across the West.
Timber Unity Corresponding Secretary Tasha Webb delivered 2,700 young trees to Valor Family Farm in Springfield, where people could pick them up with planting instructions. She said she left several hundred sugar pine seedlings, which still are awaiting homes.
Webb said she later gave away about 1,000 of the seedlings by driving around the fire area and offering them to homeowners who needed them for replanting their properties.
Oregon wildfires: Landowners scrambling for seedlings as demand spike
Timber Unity on Sunday also presented a $7,000 check to Marc Brooks from Cascade Relief Team, a group of volunteers aiding wildfire recovery across Oregon. The money will fund a mobile tool library, which will be deployed statewide to help wildfire victims.
The Timber Unity donation bought the library's 8x20 trailer, but Webb said tool donations still are being accepted. Anyone wanting to donate can contact her at 541-228-8227.
The Cascade Relief Team has been helping to clean up Blue River since February. The group's teams also have helped wildfire clean-up efforts in Otis and the Medford area.
"His mobile tool library will help him continue to provide help all over the state, without spending over a thousand a month to rent one, and without having to purchase new tools wherever he travels to cleanup next," Webb said. "He brings hope, excitement and encouragement to those who just couldn't see it or just needed the sense of community."
