The Pentecost Bank Holiday Weekend could be a nightmare for those travelling by road, warns the Vejdirektorate road directorate.

Many people in Denmark are expected to get in their cars and spend the time with family at summerhouses.

Three peak periods to avoid
Heavy traffic leaving the cities, predominantly heading from east to west Denmark, is expected on Friday 21 May between 14:00 and 19:00, and on Saturday from 11:00 to 14:00.

And then return traffic is anticipated to peak on Monday 24 May between 12:00 and 16:00.

Beware of the E20
The E20 Funen motorway is expected to be one of the busiest routes, particularly as roadworks are in operation in both directions.

Motorists can also expect longer trips to holiday home areas in north Zealand, around Skagen and along Jutland’s west coast.

Stay up to date with the traffic forecast by visiting trafikinfo.dk. You can also listen to P4 Trafik, which regularly provides updated traffic reports.

Denmark’s only Bank Holiday Monday
Pentecost, which is also known as Whitsun, is always celebrated on the seventh Sunday after Easter.

It commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit at an event held shortly after the death of Christ, which is documented in the Acts of the Apostles.

While some countries, like Denmark, hold a bank holiday on the Monday after Pentecost, others like Britain hold their Whit Monday on a more fixed date: the final Monday in May.
