ORLANDO, Fla. – Floridians can make final purchases Sunday on certain disaster preparedness items to receive tax exemptions through the state’s sales tax holiday.
The Disaster Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday kicked off May 28, offering 10 days where shoppers could save some money on hurricane supplies.

Some of the qualifying items include reusable ice packs for $20 or less, any portable self-powered light for $40 or less, and even portable generators for $1,000 or less.
“When we actually hear of a hurricane coming, there’s always a run on the shelves,” said Matthew Audier, assistant manager at Ace Hardware in Apopka. “Now is the time to get prepared. Now is the time to be thinking about it.”
The start of hurricane season was June 1. Though Central Florida has been spared from major storms in recent hurricane seasons, it should still be a priority to be prepared before a storm.
Eric Alberts, Orlando Health’s corporate director of emergency preparedness, reminds Central Floridians in one simple sentence why they should still make preparing a priority each and every year: “It only takes one.” Alberts pointed to the fact that hurricane seasons have been so active lately that the National Hurricane Center has even begun issuing tropical weather outlooks before the official start of the season.
