TRUSSVILLE — The work to improve a busy intersection in downtown Trussville is underway and there are fewer traffic delays than first expected.

Mayor Buddy Choat said the project is part of the Quad I phase of downtown redevelopment. The intersection of Highway 11 and Chalkville Road will take about a month to renovate. The work began on Monday, July 6, 2020.

Chief Eric Rush said police officers are present 24/7 while crews work to make the improvements. Rush said planning detours around the construction began ahead of the start of the work to ensure a safe and efficient plan.

“So far I am pleased with the flow of the traffic around the detour area,” said Rush. “Our officers are working the construction zone to ensure that the traffic continues to flow smoothly and that motorists continue to drive safely.”

There is limited access to Chalkville Road from Main Street.

For the first phase of the project, all lanes of South Chalkville are blocked from Highway 11. For the second phase, all lanes of North Chalkville will be blocked.

For South Chalkville Road, Waterson Parkway is being used as one detour. Another detour around South Chalkville is City Hall Drive and Railroad Avenue.

Detours around North Chalkville Road are Linden Street and Glenn Avenue and Poplar Street and Parkway Drive.

Rush said while he knows the progress means possible delays, he urges all drivers to use caution in the area.

“I appreciate the continued patience of drivers until this construction project is completed and traffic can resume normal flow,” Rush said.
